European energy: 234 million in funding for an agrivoltaic park in Vizzini
A 225-megawatt project that will generate 405 gigawatt-hours of electricity. The wind farm will produce electricity on an industrial scale whilst allowing the land to be used for agricultural purposes
The Danish group European Energy, as the project developer, has finalised a loan worth €234.1 million, arranged through its Italian subsidiary Sun Project (as the borrower), which is developing an advanced 225-megawatt agrivoltaic project in Vizzini, Sicily.
The development of this park follows Ee’s successful bid, at the end of 2025, in the FerX contract-for-difference auction for five solar projects spread across Sicily, Puglia and Molise. One of these is in Vizzini: a project with a total value of around 250 million.
The financing, provided by Crédit Agricole Cib, Intesa Sanpaolo (IMI Cib division), Nord/LB and Société Générale, will provide substantial support for the construction of the project, which is scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2028. “This transaction,” says Alessandro Migliorini, CEO of Sun Project and Head of Public Affairs at EE, “is one of the first financing deals for an agrivoltaic project of this scale and complexity in Italia. It also demonstrates that agrivoltaic projects can be financed by banks – in this case, four major European credit institutions – and paves the way for the development of the market in Italia, as it instils confidence in investors.”
Construction of the park is already underway and, once completed, it will be one of the largest agrivoltaic projects in Italia: it will generate around 405 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the energy consumption of over 135,000 households. The project, which, as mentioned, benefits from a 20-year Contract for Difference (CFD) (awarded under the Italia government’s FerX support scheme), unlike a conventional photovoltaic plant, combines the production of renewable electricity on an industrial scale with the agricultural use of the land; includes sheep grazing, reforestation initiatives and measures to protect biodiversity across the entire site, requiring that the energy and agricultural components be integrated into the overall design and management of the project.
“Vizzini,” emphasises Filippo Ricci, Ee’s country manager for Italia, “demonstrates that agrivoltaics can move beyond the development phase and progress to large-scale construction and financing. “The combination of contracted revenues, a guaranteed grid connection and a robust technical and agricultural design has enabled us to build a bankable structure for a particularly complex renewable energy project. This is important not only for Vizzini, but also for the development of the agrivoltaic market in Italia.”
