Almost half of Italian fans (48%) are ready to choose Germany as their main summer holiday destination. This is what emerges just hours before the kick-off of the UEFA EURO 2024 from a survey by Booking.com-SWG on the impact of the European competition on the world of travel.
Increased bookings in Germany
The research, which was conducted by cross-referencing interviews with a representative sample of the adult population and online data on destinations, accommodation and bookings made between May and July, i.e. the central period during which the national football teams' matches will be played, shows that for fans, the start of UEFA EURO 2024 represents an opportunity to coincide the summer break with the discovery of Germany, the home of the Europeans. Instead of the traditional destinations, almost half (48%) of Italian fans will travel to the country to support the Azzurri and will take the opportunity to continue their holidays on German soil by adding stops even after the European Championships have ended.
Expenditure up to EUR 1,500
Since the match schedules have been announced, Booking.com data reveal an increase in bookings in German cities that will host Italian national team matches. These include Leipzig and Dortmund, with the small city of Gelsenkirchen rising from 274th to 36th place among the most booked destinations as it prepares to host Italy vs Spain on 20 June.
