Pope’s excommunication: the Lefebvrians lodge an appeal

The Lefebvrians were excommunicated by Pope Leo following the ordination of new bishops without a mandate are appealing against the Vatican decree of 2 July.
The Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X (FSSPX) has announced in a statement that, in response to the decree issued on 2 July 2026 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, it lodged a preliminary appeal with that same Congregation on 11 July, in accordance with canons 1734 et seq. of the Code of Canon Law.
“This procedure,” states the Fraternity, “which constitutes a prerequisite prior to the possible initiation of hierarchical action, has the effect of suspending the effects of the decree, in accordance with canon 1353 of the Code of Canon Law. Through this remedy, the Fraternity intends to exercise the right recognised by the Church for anyone who considers themselves wronged by an administrative act to seek its rectification, in a spirit of respect for ecclesiastical authority and of faithful commitment to justice, truth and the good of the Church.”
