Zelensky at the Nordic-Baltic Eight: ‘Peace? We need a summit involving Russia, the EU and the US. Ukraine is on board.’
The Ukrainian president is in Tallinn with the leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden
Key points
“Our steadfast approach to imposing sanctions on Russia is paying off. That is why we are proposing the 21st package today.” This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen when presenting the 21st package of sanctions against Russia. The focus is on energy, finance and a travel ban on Russian veterans of the war in Ukraine. Measures targeting the fishing sector are also being proposed.
EU: €9 billion for Ukraine by the end of June
At the same time, support – including financial support – for Kyiv has been confirmed. “Yesterday we disbursed almost €3 billion from the fund earmarked for Ukraine. And this month we will disburse the first tranche of our €90 billion loan to Ukraine. So, by the end of the month, we will provide Ukraine with €6 billion for drones and over €3 billion in macro-financial aid,” Von der Leyen announced at the same time. “To conclude, one thing I greatly admire about our Ukrainian friends is their unwavering determination to belong to our European Union. It is impressive. They are implementing one reform after another whilst their cities are under attack, whilst the sky above them is filled with smoke and air-raid sirens are sounding across the country,” she added.
This gesture did not go unnoticed by the Ukrainian president. “Ukraine has done everything necessary to open the negotiating clusters on the EU accession process; it is important that progress is made in opening them, so that the Russians can see that Europe keeps its promises and does not compromise on its interests,” Zelensky said today at a press conference in Estonia.
The Nordic-Baltic Eight in Tallinn
“First meeting with Latvia’s new prime minister, Andris Kulbergs, and an important outcome for our countries: we have signed the Drone Deal. These are concrete steps to strengthen our common defence and co-production,” the Ukrainian president announced today on X.
“We will help Ukraine achieve a just and lasting peace. We will not accept the idea that borders can be changed by force. International law is not optional. And Ukraine belongs in the EU and NATO. The future of Europe’s security will be decided by Europeans together with Ukraine, and not by the Kremlin,” Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said today during the press conference of the prime ministers of the NB8 countries – the Nordic-Baltic Eight, a regional cooperation format comprising Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden – and the President of Ukraine in Tallinn.
