Lots of wood and one way out at Le Constellation bar
After the devastating fire in Crans-Montana, which claimed dozens of lives and injured many more, the investigation now focuses on the bar where the tragedy occurred. How is it possible that the fire spread so quickly? Were the safety measures adequate? A look inside the bar provides the first clues. The lounge bar 'Le Constellation' was a popular meeting place in the Valais ski resort: a café by day, a bar and disco by night, with space for around 300 guests. DJs performed regularly and the festive atmosphere attracted a predominantly international audience.
According to tourist guides and online reviews, the bar was considered a trendy place for après-ski and nightlife, a place to end the evening in style. But behind the glamorous façade, hints of potential safety shortcomings emerged. On the evaluation platforms, the bar scored only 6.5 out of 10 points in the security category. Inside, there was only one access and escape route in the basement, which would have hindered evacuation in the event of an emergency. In short, it was a real trap for patrons, many of whom lost their lives and many suffered serious burns. In addition, the restaurant was furnished with many wooden elements, a factor that today, in retrospect, appears particularly critical.
Le Constellation was founded in 2015 by a French couple from Corsica, who took over the then dilapidated building and completely renovated it. The couple runs several restaurants in the region. However, negative reviews have repeatedly criticised the customer service, lack of professionalism and, at times, poor value for money. Remarkably, the bar's online presence disappeared shortly after the fire: its Facebook and Instagram pages were shut down and Google listed the restaurant as 'temporarily closed'. It is not yet clear whether these measures are directly related to the fire. The exact causes of the fire are still unknown; the Valais cantonal police are conducting the investigation.

The 'flashover' effect, that's what triggered the Crans-Montana tragedy
The tragedy in Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve was caused by a ''flashover'', an ''extremely dangerous phenomenon in which fire spreads suddenly and violently in closed rooms, causing one or more explosions''. This was reported by the cantonal authorities, as reported by the Swiss media. The term flashover refers to the sudden change from a localised fire to a generalised fire. A fire can, for example, start from an appliance in a room and if heat builds up under the ceiling, combustion gases spread through the space and the temperature rises very quickly to several hundred degrees. This effect can cause other combustible materials to ignite simultaneously and suddenly, with flames spreading like wildfire. ''At that point, survival is virtually impossible. The situation represents a mortal danger even for firefighters,'' the Swiss media explain.

Emma and Albane, two young French women, escaped from the bar 'La Constellation', as they told the news portal 'BFM'. "There was total panic, everyone was screaming."
The two claim that the fire was caused by a 'birthday candle' that the waitresses had placed on the champagne bottles. The Valais cantonal prosecutor cites arson as the main hypothesis, without giving further details.
The exit door was too small for the crowd, so a window was broken to save people. Fire brigade and police arrived "within minutes". One woman was pushed down the stairs by the crowd and injured her knee.
The women estimate that around 200 people were present, including young people between the ages of 15 and 20.
Victoria, another French woman present, described the cause of the fire as follows: a lit candle on a champagne bottle ignited the ceiling when one woman, carried on the shoulders of another, held the bottle too high. According to Victoria, the flames spread 'incredibly fast'.
