Fabio Mussi, former Minister for Universities, has died
Avs, a member of Sinistra Italiana, was formerly a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), a member of the second Prodi government, and a Member of Parliament for the PDS and DS
“Last night, Fabio Mussi passed away at Sant’Eugenio Hospital in Rome.” The news was reported in a statement by Avs. He served as Minister for Universities in the second Prodi government (2006–2008), was a long-standing figure on the left, and was currently a leading member of Sinistra Italiana Avs.
Mussi was born in Piombino, in the province of Livorno, on 22 January 1948. At a very young age, he joined the Central Committee of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), for which he subsequently served as a Member of Parliament from 1992, remaining with the party through its various incarnations (PDS and DS) until 2008. He was leader of the PDS-Ulivo parliamentary group in 1996 and then, in 2001, Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. He was also deputy editor of Rinascita and later co-editor of L’Unità.
He did not join the PD, and played a part in the formation first of SEL and then of Sinistra Italiana. It will be possible to pay a final tribute to Fabio Mussi on Saturday 5 September 2026 in the morning in Rome at the mortuary of Sant’Eugenio Hospital, 25 Via Rhodesia, from 9.30 am to 12 noon. Then, on Saturday afternoon in Piombino, at the farewell hall of the Pubblica Assistenza at Piombino Cemetery, from around 4.00 pm.
