Task force of 50 people at the Farnesina for Italians in the Gulf area: they answer the same number (0636225) as the Crisis Unit but with a switchboard that sorts calls. On the morning of Sunday 1 March, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held a meeting with ambassadors in Iran and the region to assess the progress of military operations by Israel and the United States. Afterwards, Tajani had a meeting with the press. "The situation with more Italians and uncertainty in Dubai and Abu Dhabi," stressed the minister, who also pointed out that "Oman is closing borders, Italians stay in Dubai". Since "some people have tried to enter Oman with a very long journey, one has to be very careful, it is about a five-hour journey to the border". The Farnesina titular assured that 'all embassy and consulate staff mobilised to support Italians'. Meanwhile, tomorrow at 3pm, the Foreign Minister and Council Vice-President Antonio Tajani is scheduled to give an urgent briefing on the situation in Iran and the Persian Gulf in front of the Senate Foreign and Defence Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Also tomorrow, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has convened the National Committee for Public Order and Security at the Viminale
Meloni updates Mattarella on Middle East developments and contacts
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after having heard the Middle East leaders, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in her capacity as rotating presidency of the European Union, "reported to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, providing him with a full update on developments in the situation and on the contacts that have taken place". This was reported in a note from Palazzo Chigi.
No consequences for Italian military in Kuwait
"The hostile event that affected the Al Salem base in Kuwait, where a contingent of about 300 Italian military personnel operates, did not cause any consequences to personnel, but only limited damage to some logistical and operational infrastructures of the base. A more complete assessment, however, is still in progress. I am maintaining constant and direct contact with all the commanders of the missions and operations in the area; in particular, with the commander of the Unifil mission and the commander of the Sector West of the same mission in Lebanon, with the commander of the contingent stationed in Erbil in Iraq, the commander of the Air Task Force in Kuwait and the commanders of the naval units engaged in the Atalanta and Aspides operations". Thus the Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano. "The commander of the Task Force Air in Kuwait, Colonel Marco Mangini, confirmed to me the immediate activation of the planned security procedures. As mentioned, there was damage to some surface infrastructure inside the base, the extent of which is still being assessed. All Italia personnel were promptly transferred to the protection bunkers and, at present, are unharmed and safe," added Portolano.
In Dubai and Abu Dhabi more Italians and more uncertainty
According to the Foreign Minister, therefore, 'the situation where there are more Italians and where there is more uncertainty at the moment is in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, especially in Dubai. "Our consulate is operational, we have added five emergency lines to the consulate. Yesterday,' he explained, 'the consul and vice-consul were at the airport. We are also assisting groups of underage youth. At the moment the consul of Italia in Dubai is in contact with these youngsters. So they are all being looked after, accommodated in hotels. Everything is guaranteed and supported also economically by the UAE government, as the Foreign Minister assured me yesterday. The same in Abu Dhabi, where a skyscraper near our diplomatic headquarters was hit. That is why all the work is taking place in the residence and not in the embassy'.
Assistance also for Italians from the Maldives
Tajani also pointed out that 'we are also assisting Italians, especially tourists, who had to travel on return flights from the Maldives via Dubai. Our honorary consul in the Maldives is at the airport right now to support the Italians. And our embassy in Sri Lanka, which is responsible for the Maldives, is also working to assist Italians passing through Colombo. So mobilisation is total on the part of all our diplomatic offices in the area'.
