Goodbye Fiat 500 thermal. Welcome Fiat 500 hybrid. If in a few months the iconic model, launched in 2007 and updated several times in its 16-year career, is ready to be removed from the market due to European safety directives, a new Fiat 500 hybrid will arrive in Mirafiori in 2026, based on the current electric 500, based on an ad hoc platform and not shared with other group models. Goodbye then to the petrol or hybrid Fiat 500 for almost two years? As of today, it seems so, unless there is a Pandina-style operation where the current model is given new life.

New Fiat 500 hybrid

.

The announcement came directly from Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, after the many questions about the future of the Mirafiori plant, which is currently engaged exclusively in the production of the electric Fiat 500. The latter model is completely different from the 'traditional' 500 built in Poland since 2007, and designed exclusively to be combined with electric drive. It is precisely for this reason that the new production line at Mirafiori will be built at significant cost and development time, due to the long list of modifications starting with the new front end built to house the combustion engine, which will probably be the already known 1.2 Puretech of Psa origin combined with the e-Dct gearbox produced precisely at Mirafiori. Practically the same layout already seen, and appreciated, on the Jeep Avenger or Lancia Ypsilon.

Addio STLA Small

No production of the future Fiat 500 hybrid on the Stla Small platform, i.e. the 'Bev by Design' architecture (designed for fully electric models but adaptable to hybrid) as the basis for future compact vehicles with lengths from 3,500 to 4,300 mm.

The new platform will instead arrive at the Spanish Stellantis plants, with the future Peugeot 208 likely to debut with the flat Stla Small. If Mirafiori will not receive the new architecture, the situation is different for Melfi, where the Stla Medium will arrive, and Cassino with the Stla Large. It is precisely in Melfi that a hybrid version of the Jeep Compass will also arrive, while Cassino will be home to the future Lancia Gamma.
