The numbers are coming in on the adhesion to the 'beach umbrella strike' organised by the beachwear trade unions to protest against the government's failure to respond by the summer break to the request for regulatory intervention on the long-standing and unresolved issue of concessions. This morning the beach umbrellas opened not at 7.30 but two hours. A demonstration that has, however, split the category: Sib-Confcommercio and Fiba-Confesercenti have taken the path of mobilisation, while other unions such as Assobalneari, Federbalneari, and Cna have distanced themselves, speaking of a 'spot initiative'.

Fiba Confesercenti: membership above expectations

"There is a great adhesion, above expectations, to the awareness-raising moment wanted and organised today by Fiba Confesercenti and Sib Confcommercio. The most important seaside resorts in Italy, such as Romagna and Tuscany, are seeing almost total participation, and over 80% of beach operators have kept their umbrella service closed throughout the country". Thus Maurizio Rustignoli, president of Fiba Confesercenti.

Capacchione (Sib): Massive participation in strike

"We have registered a massive participation throughout Italy in the umbrella strike, beyond all expectations," said Antonio Capacchione, president of the Italian bathing union adhering to Fipe/Confcommercio.

Codacons: strike was a flop

But for Codacons, 'an association that has always been involved in monitoring bathing establishments', the situation is different: 'The number of lidos that closed during the two-hour strike is lower than expected, and the protest has not achieved the desired results. - explains the consumer association. - Beyond the demands of the category, which rightly asks for certainty about its future, proclaiming strikes in the middle of the summer season is confirmed as a wrong choice, rejected both by consumers and by the managers themselves.

The Papeete also participated in the protest

.

At the umbrella lockout 'we also participated. We are an important reality but we are also lifeguards. We are like everyone else, maybe we do things that others don't do, but we are all part of the same family and I thought it was right to do it'. This is how Massimo Casanova, former MEP for the League and owner of Papeete Beach in Milano Marittima. On the beach concessions front, he explains, 'I know the story very well, there was no willingness on the part of the Draghi government to come to an agreement, we were asking for two or three things, but above all compensation' in the event of auctions. "I am against Bolkestein but Bolkestein himself said that he had not made the law targeting bathing establishments".

Tents open at Twiga open, strike at Ultima Spiaggia

There is no doubt about what to do with the bathers' strike against the government at the Twiga Beach Club establishment in Marina di Pietrasanta (Lucca) owned by Flavio Briatore and up to two years also with shares in the company of Minister Daniela Santanché: there are only tents to give shade to customers on the beach, and these remain open at all times. They are fixed installations that are only dismantled at the end of the bathing season. In Capalbio (Grosseto), on the other hand, the Ultima Spiaggia has kept its umbrellas closed. It is the establishment that for many years boasted an almost exclusive VIP clientele oriented to the left.
