Giovanni Malagò formalises candidature for Figc presidency with the support of Lega Serie B and sports associations
Malagò presents himself as a strong single candidate, challenging Giancarlo Abete in a climate of tensions and investigations in Italia football ahead of the assembly on 22 June.
The hourglass is emptying fast, on 13 May the deadline for the candidature for the presidency of the FIGC expires, 40 days before the elective assembly on 22 June, and the first to anticipate his move is the former president of CONI, Giovanni Malagò: 'I had said it, and I am true to my word: out of institutional respect for the president Cio Coventry, who was here in Rome, and for the components, I have always reiterated that I would have withdrawn my reservations immediately afterwards.
I confirm that tomorrow morning (13 May, ndr) I will file my candidature for the presidency with the Federcalcio,' he told Ansa on the sidelines of the charity dinner for the Coppa Italia final at the Olimpico.
Shortly before, the Lega Serie B had announced, again via Ansa, its decision to converge on him, according to the orientation recorded among the 20 cadet clubs.
The plot seems to be written, given that also in the running to succeed Gabriele Gravina is the president of the National Amateur League (Lnd), Giancarlo Abete, but only the act of filing (by 6pm at the FIGC secretariat, 11.59pm via Pec) will make the challenge official, opening a new phase of the path that could reserve other surprises until 22 June.
At the moment Malagò, the candidate of the League Serie A, has the support of the footballers' and coaches' associations and the Lega B, which voting together would lead to a theoretical 54% of the preferences, while Abete has the backing of the Amateurs (34%).
