Summer at the cinema again rhymes with Marvel: after films such as 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' in 2019, 'Black Widow' in 2021 or 'Thor: Love and Thunder' in 2022, the Disney-owned film studio is again banking on July to launch a new production.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is a crossover that unites two decidedly different characters, two anti-heroes who find themselves having to work together to face a terrible new threat.

The third instalment in the 'Deadpool' saga (the first under Disney's hat, following the Fox takeover in 2019), the film follows the events recounted in 'Deadpool 2', a 2018 feature film that confirmed the box-office success of contemporary cinema's most unconventional and irreverent superhero.

After Tim Miller and David Leitch, directors of the two previous chapters, the signature of this new product is that of Shawn Levy, known for having directed "A Night at the Museum" (2006) and for having produced the TV series "Stranger Things" (2016). It should be noted that Levy had already directed Ryan Reynolds (the actor who plays Deadpool) in "Free Guy - Hero for a Game" (2021) and "The Adam Project" (2022).

These collaborations were probably instrumental in the choice of director, since Reynolds - as well as actor and screenwriter - is also the producer of this film, which is undoubtedly more ambitious than the two previous titles.

The ironic tones, which are not lacking, are in fact combined with a melancholic atmosphere in several passages, so as to recall previous misadventures of the Wolverine character and, in particular, the 2017 film 'Logan', a sorrowful and touching feature film, one of the best results of comic book cinema, which ended with the death of the protagonist (but with the logic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's multiverse, by now, each character can be relaunched in a different way without any problems).

A buddy-movie for fans

.

One can feel, in this film, the greater depth that has been attempted to give the character of Deadpool, as shown by several dialogues with Wolverine, at times capable of touching deep chords, at other times excessively coarse.

However, there is no shortage of lighter and fun buddy-movie moments, especially for fans of the two characters and nostalgics who have been waiting for Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine (surely one of the best-loved superheroes ever). Also present are numerous self-quotations, often ironic, as well as a high number of well-choreographed fights, combined with a series of irreverent situations perfectly in the spirit of Deadpool's character.

The narrative structure has exciting and successful passages, although the overall design smacks too much of the familiar and the result is a film that risks being forgotten rather quickly at the end of the viewing.

In any case, Levy's directing is brighter than that of many of his colleagues who have devoted themselves to the world of cinecomics, and the pace holds up quite well for the approximately two-hour duration. For summer viewing, without great pretension, it may well be enough.

To Leslie

.

Among the most interesting new releases offered on streaming this week is 'To Leslie', which arrived exclusively for Italy on the Rarovideo Channel.

At the centre of the plot is the story of Leslie, a self-destructive and desperate woman struggling to rebuild her life after years of hardship.

Directed by Michael Morris, here in his film debut after having directed episodes of television series such as "Bloodline", "House of Cards" and "Better call Saul", "To Leslie" is a feature film that deals with delicate themes: from the desire for redemption to the need to find one's place in the world, through the description of a complicated humanity, which is portrayed without discounts and with good sensitivity.

A few passages are acerbic and a little didactic, but the film has its strength in the writing and, even more so, in Andrea Riseborough's outstanding performance, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The British performer gives here the most intense proof of her entire career and by far one of the most significant ones seen in recent times. It is certainly worth a viewing.
