Accident at Fincantieri Ancona: one worker killed by a blast of flame, another in a critical condition
They were caught in a burst of flame whilst working on a ship inside a warehouse
A 55-year-old Tunisian worker has died from his burns, whilst another, a 29-year-old of Bengali origin, has been transferred from Ancona Regional Hospital to the Severe Burns Centre in Pisa in a critical condition. This is the tragic outcome of a workplace accident that occurred late yesterday evening at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona.
At around 10.15 pm, the two workers, employed by a contractor, were caught in a burst of flames whilst working on a ship inside a warehouse. Polmare is still investigating the circumstances of the accident. The trade unions Fiom, Fim and Uilm, who were staging a protest outside the plant, have called an eight-hour strike.
Fincantieri’s condolences
“Fincantieri expresses its ‘deepest condolences’ ‘following the death of the worker who was the victim of the accident that occurred last night at the Ancona shipyard, and extends its sympathy to his family and colleagues’.” The company stands “in solidarity with the other injured worker, in the hope that his condition will improve. The accident involved two workers from a contractor.” “Emergency services were promptly alerted and the required emergency procedures were activated immediately.” Fincantieri “stands ready to assist the relevant authorities and pledges its full cooperation with the ongoing investigations to shed full light on the matter.”
