Fincantieri: Folgiero – a historic breakthrough in underwater technology; let’s speed up the plan
The group is stepping up its business plan by integrating expertise and technologies, targeting a rapidly expanding market and aiming for improved profitability
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “Today’s transaction marks a historic industrial transformation for Fincantieri, creating an international leader in the underwater sector, thanks to the full integration of technologies, expertise and operational capabilities across the value chain.” So said Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive of Fincantieri, commenting on the four underwater acquisitions announced to the market. “These acquisitions also enable us to accelerate the implementation of our business plan, significantly strengthening profitability and capitalising on a rapidly expanding market, where the dual-use component is set to become increasingly important. We have also chosen to preserve the industrial continuity of the acquired companies by retaining the existing management teams, as we believe that expertise and execution are essential to the Group’s growth.”
In the underwater sector, in addition to its long-standing presence in the submarine industry, Fincantieri has acquired Remazel Engineering and WASS Submarine Systems in recent years. The relevant underwater market, including submarines, sensors, effectors and non-conventional underwater systems, is forecast to grow strongly, reaching a cumulative value of €155 billion in the period 2026–2030 – according to a statement issued by the company – The non-conventional underwater (UW) segment, in particular, is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 30 per cent between 2026 and 2030, driven by a sharp acceleration in defence and the protection of critical infrastructure, with the majority of the value coming from the civilian segment.
