The Pinewood of Calvino, Fruttero and Citati

The Roccamare pine forest, with its profound silence interrupted only by the rustle of the sea and the song of the cicadas, was not just a holiday resort for Calvino and the other authors. It was an existential condition, an ideal habitat to observe the world from a proper distance, to exercise what Calvino himself called 'lightness of thoughtfulness'. It was there that he wrote much of his 'Palomar', a book of short meditations on the visible universe: the sea, the sand, the waves, the turtles. Minimal observations that become metaphysical.

In a letter from 1975, Italo Calvino wrote: 'I spend the summer in a pine forest where you can hear nothing but the wind and the sea, and it is my way of experiencing the world'. But Calvino was not the only one to elect Roccamare as his refuge. Over the years, this small enclave in the Maremma has become a sort of invisible republic of Italian culture, seasonally inhabited by writers, poets, philosophers, literary critics and journalists. A silent community that shared a cult of landscape, silence and the written word.
