Five must-watch series in June: including the finales of *The Bear* and *House of the Dragon*
Browsing through the range of streaming, satellite and digital terrestrial services, here is a selection of titles you won’t want to miss
I can’t think of a better way to put it, but for me Due Spicci (Netflix) is like pizza: even when it’s not great, it’s still good. And it’s a real treat because every episode brings back memories, thoughts and things you’d love to show your children. Praise is also due to The Boroughs - Timeless Rebels (Netflix) by the Duffer Brothers (the creators of Stranger Things), who have invented a genre and are proving themselves to be postmodern in everything they do. They don’t create from scratch, but take fragments of 1980s cinema (horror, sci-fi, drama) and reassemble them into something unique, coherent and fresh. I’m therefore very curious to see their upcoming productions. Let’s now turn to June. There’s the third season of House of the Dragon (NowTV, Sky, HBO Max), which, despite the criticism, is not to be missed. Finally, I really want to see which direction The Bear (Disney+) takes and how it all ends. Enjoy the show.
Two years. That’s all it took for HBO to recharge its batteries, oil the wheels of its production machine and get its most valuable assets back on track. House of the Dragon is back, the first true billion-dollar spin-off born from the pen (and the suffering of the fans) of George R.R. Martin. Forget the preambles and political manoeuvring of the first few seasons: here, in the third season, we dive straight into the heart of the ‘Dance of the Dragons’. There is no middle ground now, only the final showdown. (Sky, Now and HBO Max)
The Bear – Season 6 – 26 June
The Bear is coming to an end, and this is no ordinary TV series: it is perhaps the most accurate and ruthless portrayal in recent years of what it means to run a business today, amid burnout, toxic passions and profit margins squeezed to the bone. Get your tissues ready and brace yourself for the final episode: the series is coming to an end. (Disney+)
The Agency – Season 2 – 21 June
If you’re looking for old-school espionage, full of car chases and gadgets, you’ve come to the wrong place. The Agency is something else entirely: it’s a sophisticated, geometric, algorithmic thriller. The second season raises the stakes and expands the scope. (Paramount+)
Cape Fear – Season 1 – 5 June
Let’s be honest: remaking a classic psychological thriller is enough to make anyone’s hands shake. But when Scorsese and Spielberg are producing, the rules of the game change. Nick Antosca’s new series takes the story of Cape Fear and updates it for the modern day, with Javier Bardem looking terrifying even on the poster. Let’s hope for the best. (Apple+)
