Flee checkpoint and crash, 16-year-old dies
The car, in which four other minors were travelling, left the road after accelerating to avoid a police checkpoint
A car driven by a 16-year-old, and in which four other minors (between 14 and 16 years old) were travelling, ran off the road after accelerating to avoid a Carabinieri checkpoint and while the soldiers were in pursuit of the car. After the impact of the fleeing car against the guard-rail, a 16-year-old passenger died, while the other four ended up in hospital. So far, three of them have been discharged and will recover in a few days, while the fourth is awaiting prognosis.
The accident happened last night around 2 a.m. in Orta Nova, in the Foggia area. The car involved was a Renault Megane station wagon with Polish number plates. The car allegedly left the road after having driven several kilometres out of Orta Nova to escape a possible police check. From what has been reconstructed so far, the teenagers accelerated at the sight of the carabinieri car engaged in a checkpoint. A chase ensued during which the boys took a bend at high speed, skidding and ending up against the guard-rail.
During the pursuit, the police car kept a distance of about 30 metres with the fleeing Renault Megane sw. This is what emerges - according to initial reconstructions - from the dynamics of the accident. It is precisely when approaching the bend that the police car would have reduced its speed further, because other traffic accidents have occurred in that area in the past. It is therefore excluded that there was any contact between the two cars. The Renault Megane driven by the 16-year-old was not stolen, but no ownership documents were found inside.
