This has never happened. In the first three months of this year, the Trump presidency has given us a new record: the highest number of American citizens applying for British citizenship since surveys began in 2004.

That's almost two thousand applications, a 12% increase over the previous quarter, which in turn had seen a steep rise in applications thanks to the tycoon's return to the Oval Office.

The Great Escape of 2020

.

The last spike in applications to become British citizens was recorded in 2020, during Trump's first presidential term and at the height of the Cvid-19 pandemic.

Other data from the Bambridge Accountants study reveal that in the first half of 2020, over 5,800 Americans renounced their citizenship, almost three times as many as in the whole of 2019.

Reason for flight: the political climate, the management of the pandemic, the taxes.

The London squeeze

.

In 2024 applications to settle permanently in the UK (around 5,500 in all, a fifth more than in the previous year)also hit new records: if approved, they entitle the applicant to live, work and study in the Kingdom indefinitely.

They can also be used to apply for citizenship. Too bad that the British prime minister Keir Starmer recently announced a control on immigration, effectively lengthening the waiting time to apply for citizenship.

The aim is to grant entry only to those who can boast higher educational qualifications, an already advanced knowledge of English and a concrete contribution to the growth of the British economy. "We do not want to become an island of foreigners," the British premier explained.
