The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation file for kidnapping in connection with the boarding by Israeli authorities of the 22 boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla on the night of 29 April off Crete in international waters.

A file on the first mission to Gaza last autumn has been open in Rome for some time. In the case, prosecutor Stefano Opilio, coordinated by prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, is proceeding against unknown persons for the crimes of kidnapping, robbery and damage with danger of shipwreck. The investigators for these proceedings will forward a rogatory request to Israel.
Meanwhile, de Avila and Abukeshek, the two activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla arrested during the boarding of the 22 boats of the Gaza-bound mission as they sailed off Crete, remain in prison. The Ashkelon court extended their detention in Shikma prison by two days, until Tuesday 5 May. They appeared on Sunday 3 May in the courtroom for the hearing. In pictures taken by Afp they appear being escorted into the courtroom with chains on their feet and Thiago with his hands handcuffed behind his back. Meanwhile Israel rejects the accusations that they were tortured: it speaks of 'false and unfounded claims prepared in advance' and adds that they were 'forced' to use force.
The two activists had started a hunger strike after reporting incidents of violence suffered in detention.
