Referee designator Rocchi investigated for fraud: 'Would have favoured Inter'
Var supervisor Gervasoni is also in the prosecutor's sights. Former referee self-suspended: "I am correct". Abodi: "If facts are ascertained, there will be consequences"
Key points
Blizzard over Italian football referees: the designator of Serie A and B, Gianluca Rocchi, is under investigation in Milan for conspiracy to commit sports fraud. The accusation is that he put pressure on some referees by conditioning their choices and opting for match directors favoured by Inter. Also under investigation is the Var supervisor Andrea Gervasoni. Focus on at least two matches, Udinese-Parma and Inter-Verona. Sports justice is also on the move: the Federal Prosecutor's Office is requesting the acts from the Milan prosecutors. 'In the event that responsibility is ascertained, there cannot but be consequences,' underlined Sports Minister Abodi. "I have always acted correctly," is the defence of Rocchi, who self-suspended.
The former international referee is investigated by the Milan public prosecutor's office for facts referring to the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 championships. The investigation is led by public prosecutor Maurizio Ascione.
The three disputed episodes
Three episodes are being contested: having 'combined' the designation of referee Colombo for Bologna-Inter on 20 April 2024; the inclusion of director Doveri in the 2025 Italia Cup semifinal, again to favour the Nerazzurri; the alleged interference in Udinese-Parma when Paterna (at the Var) consulted with someone through the transparent windows of the Var room in Lissone, then inviting referee Maresca on video.
The designator Rocchi, who has been served with a notice of guarantee in recent hours, is alleged to have somehow conditioned certain refereeing decisions by exerting pressure on the Var. There are several matches in the tournament under investigation by the investigators. These include Udinese-Parma of 1 March 2025, won by the Friulians thanks to a penalty kick by Thauvin, and Inter-Verona of January 2024, won 2-1 by the Nerazzurri. In the first match, according to the prosecution, the Var room was allegedly called upon by Rocchi to invite the Maresca referee to an on field review for a possible penalty kick for a hand foul, at first ruled out and then awarded.
Former referee: 'Confidence in the judiciary'
Rocchi, reached by the agencies, commented: 'This morning I received a notice of guarantee. I am sure I have always acted correctly and I have full confidence in the judiciary'. The former referee's defence lawyer, Antonio D'Avirro, underlines: 'I have known Mr Rocchi for years, he is a serious and correct person. At the moment I cannot make any statements, because I have to study the papers. However, I can say that my client, with whom I have spoken, disputes what he is charged with in the invitation to appear' in the Public Prosecutor's Office next 30 April.
