The 60. Biennale d'arte Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa with some 700,000 tickets sold (699,304 visitors to be exact, about 3,300 average daily) in the opening period from 20 April to 24 November 2024, plus 27,966 admissions during the pre-opening.
Before we move on to a more in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the turnout, let us recall that Adriano Pedrosa's Biennale will go down in history for having given voice to outsider artists on the margins of the art world, on (forced) migration, on the queer artist, the indigenous artist, all themes that were also largely taken up in the curatorial choices of the 88 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and scattered around the historic centre of Venice.
But not only did Pedrosa compare different generations in two fundamental nuclei, Historical and Contemporary, as well as setting up a very detailed cross-section of the artistic practices of present-day art with an important presence of ultra-contemporary artists.
Adriano Pedrosa vs Cecilia Alemani
Returning to the turnout, a comparison of the two most recent events in the Lagoon shows, with due differences in the themes developed, respectable results even if Adriano Pedrosa's Biennale had a lower turnout than Cecilia Alemani's Biennale.
The 60th. Art Biennale curated by Pedrosa showed a growth in attendance of 18% compared to the pre-Covid edition of 2019, but as already mentioned a lower result than"Il latte dei sogni", curated by Cecilia Alemani which had recorded a record 800,000 visitors in 2022 in a slightly shorter opening period: 197 days compared to 217 for Stranieri Ovunque. The 59th. Exhibition had in fact recorded record attendance, with over 805,000 tickets sold - to which must be added the 22,498 admissions during the pre-opening - an increase of 35% compared to the 173 of the pre-Covid edition in 2019.
