The 60. Biennale d'arte Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa with some 700,000 tickets sold (699,304 visitors to be exact, about 3,300 average daily) in the opening period from 20 April to 24 November 2024, plus 27,966 admissions during the pre-opening.

Before we move on to a more in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the turnout, let us recall that Adriano Pedrosa's Biennale will go down in history for having given voice to outsider artists on the margins of the art world, on (forced) migration, on the queer artist, the indigenous artist, all themes that were also largely taken up in the curatorial choices of the 88 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and scattered around the historic centre of Venice.

But not only did Pedrosa compare different generations in two fundamental nuclei, Historical and Contemporary, as well as setting up a very detailed cross-section of the artistic practices of present-day art with an important presence of ultra-contemporary artists.

Adriano Pedrosa vs Cecilia Alemani

Returning to the turnout, a comparison of the two most recent events in the Lagoon shows, with due differences in the themes developed, respectable results even if Adriano Pedrosa's Biennale had a lower turnout than Cecilia Alemani's Biennale.

The 60th. Art Biennale curated by Pedrosa showed a growth in attendance of 18% compared to the pre-Covid edition of 2019, but as already mentioned a lower result than"Il latte dei sogni", curated by Cecilia Alemani which had recorded a record 800,000 visitors in 2022 in a slightly shorter opening period: 197 days compared to 217 for Stranieri Ovunque. The 59th. Exhibition had in fact recorded record attendance, with over 805,000 tickets sold - to which must be added the 22,498 admissions during the pre-opening - an increase of 35% compared to the 173 of the pre-Covid edition in 2019.

The same origin of the public for the last two biennials was 59% from abroad and 41% from Italy. As far as the participation of young people and students under 26 is concerned, the figures are also similar, with the two Biennales recording a similar incidence of 30% of the total visitors.

The 2024 budget of the 60. Biennale

The forecasts for the economic results of the 60th International Visual Arts Exhibition in the budget drawn up by the Foundation assume a positive result of EUR 5.32 million. In drawing up the 2024 budget, the Foundation considered an audience forecast for the 60th International Visual Arts Exhibition equal to the 2022 edition with a slight increase in the average value of the ticket price, due to the introduction of new, slightly higher prices, while maintaining concessions for younger audiences aimed at encouraging the inclusion of increasingly diverse groups of the public.

Contributing to the estimated final result are 2024 budget revenues totalling Euro 66.9 million deriving from resources for public grants amounting to Euro 33 million and other revenues amounting to Euro 31.4 million, which correspond to revenues from ticketing, publishing and food and beverage services. In estimating revenues, the Foundation has decided to indicate a value in line with that of 2022, as it also did for sponsorships and liberal donations, included in the item other revenues, and estimated at Euro 7.78 million.

On the cost front, the 2024 budget indicates an amount of approximately 61 million, a value that considers costs for services of 40.7 million, personnel costs of 9.6 million with a limited increase of less than 7% and with an incidence on the value of production of 12.82% (it was 15% in 2023 and 11.84% in 2022, the same year for activities). Finally, the budget takes into account the costs of the Biennale College activities in Cinema, Dance, Music and Theatre, Visual Arts and ASAC for an annual value of 3 million.
