Former Ilva: Aigi says redundancy notices are on their way for 2,500 workers in related industries
“A necessary and inevitable step to close the hot zone”
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “I, the undersigned, Nicola Convertino, in my capacity as president of Aigi – an employers’ association representing a significant proportion of the companies in the Ilva supply chain – with deep regret announces and attaches hereto the letters relating to the collective redundancy procedure which will affect more than 2,500 workers”. This is stated in the communication announcing the commencement of the collective redundancy procedure and setting out considerations regarding the industrial and employment future of the Ilva steelworks in Taranto, sent today by Aigi to institutions and trade unions.
“This,” writes Convertino, “is an extreme and painful measure, one to which we would never have wished to resort. Dismissing our workforce means depriving ourselves of our companies’ most precious asset and source of pride: human capital built up over years of substantial investment in training and of hard sacrifices. Unfortunately, this measure is a necessary and unavoidable step, a direct consequence of the sudden deadline set for the closure of the hot section as early as October, for which there appears to be no possibility of a restart.”
