The mayor of Taranto Piero Bitetti, head of a centre-left coalition, resigned after being challenged by citizens and associations outside the city hall after a confrontation on the ex-Ilva affair with representatives of committees and movements.
The meeting was held in anticipation of the single-issue municipal council meeting on 30 July called to discuss the decarbonisation agreement proposed by the government and the summit at Mimit on 31 July on the same interinstitutional agreement that will have to incorporate the local authorities' suggestions.
In his letter of resignation deposited at the Protocol Office, the first citizen, it has been learnt, denounces a condition of 'political inability'. A situation that also arose as a result of attitudes deemed threatening by some activists.
