Former Ukrainian minister arrested while trying to leave the country

Former Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko was arrested on a warrant from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (Nabu) and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (Sapo) during an attempt to cross the border by train on the night of 14-15 February. Ukrainska Pravda writes this, citing an informed source. According to the reconstruction, the border guards had received a request from Nabu and Sapo about Galushchenko to obtain information in case he tried to cross the border. A procedure that is applied when a person is involved in criminal proceedings.
German Galushchenko's name ended up at the centre of an investigation for alleged corruption related to the Ukrainian energy sector. The investigation concerns a possible system of bribes and favouritism in public procurement, with particular reference to the management of the state nuclear company Energoatom. Investigators are investigating whether undue benefits were granted or personal advantages connected to contracts in the energy sector during his tenure in government.
