Declining 'traditional' disciplinary areas of the curriculum, such as economics and law, physics and mathematics, on topics of close relevance and strategic importance for the future, from environmental sustainability to resource management, from innovation to the development of cutting-edge technologies. This is the aim of the four new three-year and master's degree courses offered by the University of Milan-Bicocca for the 2025-2026 academic year. All four will be interdisciplinary, three of them will be taught in English, three will have programmed numbers and two will be inter-university, promoted in collaboration with the University of Pavia. This brings the number of Bachelor's, Master's and single-cycle Master's degree courses at the University to 84.

Three-year course

"Economics and science for environmental sustainability" is the three-year, English-language degree course, with programmed number of students, promoted by the Department of Economics, Quantitative Methods and Business Strategies, which aims to provide students with economic and scientific skills to analyse the interactions between the economy and the environment and to understand the dynamics of environmental sustainability and resource management, ecological transition and circular economy. An interdisciplinary approach combines the 'traditional' contents of an economics degree with knowledge from biology, chemistry and geology. Graduates will carry out qualified professional activities in companies, public authorities, consulting firms and leading international organisations in the field of the ecological transition of the economic-productive system.

Master's Degree

To complete the course, but also open to three-year graduates from other economics and science courses, Milano-Bicocca offers the master's degree course delivered in English 'Economics and technologies for sustainability', which is part of the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences. The objective? To train professionals with a solid interdisciplinary background and capable of becoming key players in the field of environmental sustainability with both scientific and economic skills. Future graduates will become sustainability specialists in all respects and will be able to choose from a variety of professional profiles: experts in assessing impacts and policies for sustainability, consultants for green production processes and supply chains, designers of sustainable energy systems or even environmental consultants for companies, public bodies and NGOs.

Department of Physics

The three-year English-language degree programme in 'Physical sciences for innovative technologies' (Department of Physics), delivered in a blended mode (face-to-face and distance learning) and in partnership with the University of Pavia, provides students with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of physics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science, as well as knowledge of emerging technologies, innovative processes and scientific methodologies applicable to a wide range of research, industrial and technological contexts. The main areas of employment thus include industry operating in the field of information and communication technologies, quantum technologies and energy management systems. Graduates will thus be able to facilitate the transition to more sustainable energy systems and make a useful contribution to the digital modernisation of industrial and management processes.

With the University of Pavia

"Legal Sciences and Innovation" is the three-year degree course, with a mainly distance learning delivery mode thanks to its innovative teaching content, in agreement with the University of Pavia, which aims to train professionals in the legal field who combine knowledge of legal doctrine, sources of law and current legislation with notions of asset, financial and tax management of businesses and fundamentals of machine learning and the functioning of algorithms. The course belongs to the Department of Law and places are limited, allocated by means of a knowledge test.

Between traditional education and innovation

"In recent years, the educational offer of our university has been focusing more and more on trans- and inter-disciplinary skills, which are indispensable for orientation in an ever-changing world of work,' says the Rector of the University of Milan-Bicocca, Giovanna Iannantuoni. The study courses that we have launched in the last three years are based on a new balance between traditional teaching and innovation, in a constant and participatory dialogue with students: a conscious and profitable use of digital technologies is combined with a renewed design and implementation of the way of teaching. Sustainability and innovation are the cornerstones of the courses we are launching for the coming academic year. In fact, the university's policy on educational offerings must respond to the need to forge not only future professionals, but also aware citizens with critical capabilities, capable of interpreting the lines of development of a society that is constantly evolving, also in the international context'.
