France: Louvre president resigns after jewellery theft
Laurence des Cars, the museum's director, left her post following the controversy over security flaws. Macron: 'Act of responsibility'
The president of the Louvre Museum, Laurence des Cars, resigned on 24 February after the clamatory theft of historical jewellery on 19 October.
President Emmanuel Macron accepted them, "welcoming an act of responsibility at a time when the world's largest museum needs calm and a strong new impetus to implement important security and modernisation projects and the 'Louvre - New Renaissance' project," the presidency said in a note.
The Head of State 'thanked her for her work and commitment in recent years and, on the strength of her undeniable scientific expertise, wished to entrust her with a mission within the framework of the French G7 Presidency on cooperation between the great museums of the countries concerned,' the Elysée added.
The resignation comes after several criticisms of the security lapses that emerged after the theft, which caused an international outcry.
