All the new rules to obey behind the wheel. From 14 December onwards, there will be changes: higher penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as for wild parking in disabled parking spaces or on preferential routes. Severe penalties for driving without using a headset or speakerphone. One of the innovations concerns the short suspension of the driving licence, which is immediately contested by officers without the need for intervention by the prefect. Driving licence suspension periods are increased, up to one year, for example, for anyone who abandons animals in the street. New rules for novice drivers, alongside new obligations for those driving electric scooters. Here, in summary and through a series of videointerview with the State Police, are the new rules to be observed behind the wheel.
The new rules for novice drivers
.For novice drivers, the possibility of driving more powerful cars is increased from one to three years, but the maximum permitted power limit is raised (from 55 kw/t to 75 kw/t and up to 105 kw/t for M1 vehicles, including electric or hybrid vehicles). The zero alcohol rule for sitting behind the wheel applies. Double the points deduction for novice drivers. If a driver who is under 21 years of age is found behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, he/she will not be able to obtain a licence until the age of 24. In order to obtain the pink sheet - which will last for one year - he or she will have to have carried out driving exercises, accompanied by a driving school instructor who will issue the candidate with a certificate useful for practising. Failure to comply with the rule will result in a sanction ranging from 430 to 1,731 euros, which will also fall on the person accompanying him/her. Drivers authorised to practise for category AM, A1, A2 and A licences may never carry passengers. The penalty for those who do not comply with the rules is 100 euros (identical for the passenger).
Zero tolerance for people using drugs behind the wheel
.Zero tolerance for those who drive under the influence of drugs. A saliva test is enough to immediately revoke the licence, which can only be obtained after a period of one to two years. The compulsory test is very simple: a swab under the tongue carried out on the spot. Otherwise, one is accompanied to a fixed or mobile facility for the collection of biological fluids.
Stricter penalties for those who drive after consuming alcohol
.Crackdown on those who drive after consuming alcohol. With a blood alcohol level between 0.51 and 0.8 grams per litre, the fine ranges from EUR 543 to EUR 2,170 and the suspension of the driving licence from three to six months. If the rate detected is between 0.81 and 1.5 grams per litre, the fine is between EUR 800 and EUR 3,200 and the suspension of the driving licence goes up to one year. An arrest of up to six months is also envisaged. Over 1.51 g/l the administrative penalty is up to 6,000 euros, the suspension of the driving licence goes from one to two years and the arrest from six months to one year.
When the mandatory on-board alcolock is triggered
Among the new features is the alcolock. Anyone convicted of sitting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol level above 0.81 g/l will have to install an alcolock, a device that prevents the engine from starting if the blood alcohol level detected is above zero.
