In 2024, around 10 per cent of the tourist tax was paid by Airbnb hosts. Last year, the platform collected and paid to the treasury almost EUR 100 million in tax on behalf of its hosts, while a total of EUR 1,024 million was collected with the tax, according to Jfc's findings.

"This milestone confirms the platform's ongoing commitment to compliance and in support of Italian municipalities, guaranteeing crucial revenue at a time when local authorities' budgets are under pressure," comments Matteo Sarzana, Airbnb's Country Manager for Italy. "The collection and payment of these resources reinforces Airbnb's role as a reliable partner for municipalities, ensuring that Italian cities and villages - from large urban centres to lesser-known rural 'gems' - can benefit from the positive effects of tourism.

From urban areas to coastal resorts to Alpine locations, Airbnb hosts play a key role in distributing tourist flows beyond traditional destinations. In 2024, half of all nights booked in Italy by Italians on Airbnb were to rural areas, helping to bring new opportunities and revenue to small villages and lesser-known areas. An alternative route to overtourism and to revitalising villages and areas at risk of desertification. The revenue generated by these bookings supports local governments in financing essential services and development projects, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism reach communities of all sizes. With a growing number of 'first-time' travellers discovering the authentic charm of Italy's regions, the simplified tax collection system on Airbnb helps spread the positive impact of tourism, both for hosts and for the territories they call home.

'We believe that the possibilities of supporting the territories would be even greater if the current system of collecting the tourist tax were further simplified,' Sarzana observes. 'This is why we are ready and willing to collaborate with an increasing number of administrations throughout Italy to collect and pay this fundamental tax, helping to ensure that every community can count on the positive effects of sustainable tourism.
