From *Dune* to *The Hunger Games*: here’s what’s coming to the cinemas this autumn

This is the new prequel centred on the young Haymitch Abernathy, adapted from the fifth novel in Suzanne Collins’s saga. It is the sixth film of the same name, directed by Francis Lawrence. The story is set twenty-four years before the events of the first film featuring Katniss and Peeta. The narrative unfolds at the dawn of the 50th Hunger Games (the Second Edition of Remembrance), for which Capitol City decrees that each district must send twice the usual number of tributes.

The story is told from the perspective of Haymitch Abernathy (the future mentor of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark) and is set between the events, forty years after the events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and twenty-four years before the events of the main series. Joseph Zada plays Haymitch Abernathy, who takes part in the Games and wins for District 12. Whitney Peak will play Lenore Dove, Maysilee Donner will be played by Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons is Plutarch Heavensbee and Ralph Fiennes is Coriolanus Snow. The cast also includes Glenn Close and Elle Fanning.

The film is due to be released in Italian cinemas on 19 November 2026.

Starring Austin Abrams, the new film directed by Zach Cregger breaks away from previous instalments in the film series and will closely resemble the first-person perspective of a video game. Cregger, who previously directed Barbarian and Weapons, aims to recreate the experience of playing Resident Evil, Capcom’s Japanese survival horror video game series, which has inspired a number of action-horror films directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and other directors.

Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a medical courier who finds himself caught up in a struggle for survival when chaos erupts one night. The film is rated 18 for “intense bloody violence, gore and strong language throughout”.

In Italian cinemas on 17 September 2026.

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Social – The Price of Truth centres on the investigation behind the Facebook Files, following Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a former Facebook employee turned whistleblower. Frances seeks help from Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal journalist played by Jeremy Allen White, to make thousands of internal company documents public. The cast also includes Jeremy Strong.

In cinemas on 8 October.

Nanni Moretti returns to the big screen, once again with a film adapted from a book by Eshkol Nevo, following Three Floors (2019). This time, the inspiration comes from the collection Legami (Feltrinelli, 2024). The story follows the intertwining lives of residents living in four flats in the same block, as their loneliness, frustrations and inability to communicate with one another become entwined. Starring Nanni Moretti, Louis Garrel, Jasmine Trinca and Hippolyte Girardot.

It’s out on 3 December.

A few days after 17 or 25 December, In Joy and Sorrow, the new film by Ferzan Özpetek, will be in cinemas. The cast includes Vanessa Scalera, Sabrina Ferilli, Luca Argentero, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Mara Venier, Geppi Cucciari and Milena Vukotic. It is a story of friendship, love and memories, with a star at the heart of the narrative.
