For graduates who are already working, the Covid-19 pandemic can be said to be definitively behind them. For their peers who have opted for university, however, the after-effects of the months and months of distance learning in 2020-21 continue to be seen. Evidence of this is the 2024 edition of the Eduscopio.it portal of the Agnelli Foundation, which is online as of today and which, once again, allows you to identify the schools that best prepare you for university studies or post-maturity employment. City by city. Address by address. With two new features compared to the 2023. The first is that the scientific-sports address makes its debut among the high schools; the second is that the search can be made for the entire province instead of for ten or three kilometres from the capital as was the case before.

What is Eduscopio

Eduscopio, which was launched in 2014 and is now in its eleventh edition, aims to help students and their families choose the path to follow after eighth grade. With around 2.8 million unique users having visited it since its launch and over 13.3 million page views. For this year's statistics, the Fondazione Agnelli working group, coordinated by Martino Bernardi, analysed the data of 1,347,000 Italian high school graduates in three successive school years (a.s. 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21) in around 8,150 study courses in state and state-run secondary schools.

Segmenting them according to two educational tasks: the ability of high schools and technical colleges to prepare and orientate students for a subsequent transition to university studies; the ability of technical and vocational colleges to prepare students for a successful entry into the world of work for those who, after graduation, do not intend to go to university and want to find a job immediately.

Covid effect, high schoolers trudge on

Turning to the data, in this edition of Eduscopio the most recent of the three cohorts of graduates analysed is that of the 2020-2021 school year. These are students who passed their baccalaureate in June 2021, with their schooling heavily affected by the pandemic, for half of the fourth year (the first lockdown) and almost all of the fifth year. While their average grade at the baccalaureate increased, perhaps due to the simplification of the state exam (from 77/100 in 2019 to 83 in 2021), their university adventure became more complicated. Compared to the graduates of 2020, both the percentage of those who did not give exams in their first year (almost 20%, compared to 14% in 2017 and 2018 pre-pandemic), the percentage of university credits acquired compared to the year's syllabus and the average grade on exams worsened.

Technicians and professionals return to pre-pandemic levels

Fortunately, the picture offered by the employment of technical and vocational graduates in 2021 is different. Their employment rate calculated according to the Eduscopio parameters (equal to the percentage of those who have worked for at least six months within the first two years after graduation out of those who have not enrolled at university) is close to 35%, up five points compared to their 2020 counterparts. This brings them back to pre-Covid-19 levels.

"Once again this year," emphasised the director of the Agnelli Foundation, Andrea Gavosto, "our platform, which is completely free of charge, offers a huge amount of information and data, together with user-friendly tools that allow comparisons between schools of the same subject area.

The map of the best city schools

.

So let's find out a little more, while waiting for MIM to publish the usual circular at the end of November on enrolments for the new school year, 2025/26. In Milan, the best classical high school is the Salvatore Quasimodo (Magenta), and compared to last year, the number of parochial institutes in the top 10 best classical schools has risen from two to three. As far as science is concerned, at the top two places are two 'city' institutes the Alessandro Volta and the Leonardo Da Vinci (as in the 2023 edition). But a wider look at the province also shows how, for example, in Rome, among the best science high schools, there is the Vito Volterra of Ciampino, second, behind the Augusto Righi. In Rome, the best classical high school is always the Ennio Quirino Visconti, while the first two economic technical institutes are the Leonardo Da Vinci and the Croce - Aleramo; among the technological ones, the first two are in the province, the Stanislao Cannizzaro (Colleferro) and the Sandro Pertini (Genzano di Roma). In Naples, the best classical high school is confirmed as the Convitto Vittorio Emanuele II, while nine of the top ten technical economic institutes are paritarian schools, almost all in the province. The top three technical-technological institutes are also paritarian, in the order Santa Maria, Eugenio Montale, Copernico.
