Photographs and the potential of foreign direct investment in Italy were at the centre of the conference organised in Tokyo by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy on the occasion of the Tokyo leg of the world tour of the sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci and the Italy Village, the travelling exhibition of Italian excellence that accompanies the ship to eight key metropolises around the world.

Ntt Data strengthens in Cosenza

A tour that is proving to be not only a (certainly important) moment for the promotion of Made in Italy products, but also an opportunity for important political, commercial and industrial relations. Precisely on the sidelines of yesterday's conference (entitled 'Invest in Italy: where innovating is tradition') Ntt Data, a Japanese multinational that deals with system integration, announced a new investment in Italy for the construction of its pole in Cosenza. This was confirmed by Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini, following the agreement. "Ntt will increase its investment in Southern Italy, with 500 new jobs. This is a strategic investment for the group, because it is linked to the development of existing activities to support customers and a new Artificial Intelligence Lab, connected to the ambitious AI Metamorphosis project, which aims to guide companies in an evolution that impacts their entire organisation.

In addition to Ntt, Japanese companies with investments in our country included Denso, Hitachi, Ihi, Marelli Holdings, Marubeni, Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Nippon Sanso, NTT Data and Shionogi at the conference organised by Mimit inside the Vespucci ship. In all, there are now 557 Japanese direct investments in Italy.

Vespucci ambassador of made in Italy

"We are here with a piece of Italy and the Vespucci who is an itinerant ambassador proposing to foreign companies to invest in Italy," said Valentini. "Our country is ready to welcome companies with a renewed legislative and administrative apparatus, and strong in the historical friendship at the basis of relations between the two countries, which is strengthened every day in the collaboration and what Japanese companies do in Italy.

Relations between the two countries received new impetus with the signing in January 2023 by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of a strategic partnership. 'Our governments intend to further promote cooperation in trade, industry and investment,' said Japanese Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Nobuhiro Yoshida. Business-to-business cooperation is equally vibrant, and companies will also benefit from the events that await us in the coming months to further develop their relations, starting with Expo Osaka and then the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026'.

The outlook for tourism

.

The Vespucci yesterday also discussed the prospects of increased tourist flows between Italy and Japan, at a conference organised by the Ministry of Tourism and the Italian Tourist Board (Enit).

The event was attended by leading Japanese operators and experts in the sector, with whom the Italian Ambassador to Tokyo Gianluigi Benedetti analysed the most recent data on flows to and from Japan, which, he said, testified to 'a real renaissance in tourism, favoured by the resumption of direct air connections between Tokyo, Rome and Milan, operated by ITA Airways and All Nippon Airways'.

In fact, Ambassador Benedetti recalled how in 2023 there was a peak of 131,000 Italian arrivals in Japan, a record figure confirmed by the current year's trend, and how the flow of Japanese tourists to Italy had also exploded with 'absolute numbers doubled compared to 2022 and stays that have become longer, with hotel stays even tripling to 440,000'.

Enit presented the operators present with an overview of the main events scheduled to take place in Italy in the rest of 2024 and next year.
