Investigations into mayors and councillors are shaking up local politics across the country, from right to left. Starting from Milan, where the mayor, Beppe Sala, has decided to move on after the investigation against him in the town planning enquiry. There are two alleged offences against him: 'false declarations on his own or other people's personal qualities' and participation in 'undue induction to give or promise benefits'. The same investigation led the Public Prosecutor's Office to request house arrest for the Councillor for Urban Regeneration of the Municipality, Giancarlo Tancredi, (who resigned) on charges of corruption, undue induction and forgery.

Even in the Piedmontese capital, the junta is at risk. The Torino public prosecutor's office has, in fact, concluded its investigation into the Rear case, a company that deals with surveillance and security. Eight in all have been investigated for offences ranging from embezzlement to patrimonial infidelity, including Mauro Laus, a member of parliament, Mimmo Carretta, municipal councillor for sport and major events, and Maria Grazia Grippo, president of the municipal council. Paolo Mazzoleni, town planning councillor of the municipality of Turin is instead under investigation in Milan in the many town planning investigations.

Also in the North-West, in Liguria, an investigation for corruption and disclosure of official secrets concerning the mayor of Genoa Silvia Salis, involved the former municipal councillor for civil protection for Fratelli d'Italia, Sergio Gambino. While the investigation that saw the arrest of former governor Giovanni Toti on corruption charges dates back to a year ago.

Also in the north, in Veneto, the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has been indicted, along with 33 other suspects, on charges of corruption as part of the 'Swamp' investigation involving the municipality. The same offence was also charged against the former councillor for Mobility, Renato Boraso, now under house arrest. More corruption allegations concern some administrators from central to southern Italy. A recent case is that of the former mayor of Prato, Ilaria Bugetti, who is being investigated as part of an enquiry into an alleged exchange of favours between her and textile entrepreneur Riccardo Matteini Bresci.

In the Marches, in the last few hours, on the other hand, is the notice of investigation received by the former mayor of Pesaro and PD candidate for the presidency of the Region, Matteo Ricci, in an investigation into alleged irregularities in municipal entrusting. Enquiries also took place in the South, where in Campania, the former mayor of Sorrento, Massimo Coppola, was arrested in flagrante delicto on 21 May, after having pocketed a 'bribe' from a businessman. Already in prison, he was served a precautionary measure on 15 July as part of the investigation into alleged irregularities in the awarding of contracts in Sorrento.

The latest case involving the local administrations of Puglia concerns the now former regional councillor for economic development, Alessandro Delli Noci, who is accused of corruption and the illegal management of public funds. The investigation aims to shed light on alleged favours granted to entrepreneurs. While in neighbouring Basilicata, Vito Bardi, the Forza Forza Italia governor, has been remanded for trial on charges of conspiracy to induce others to give or promise benefits, as part of an investigation into healthcare in Basilicata.

Not even Sicilia is exempt from investigations and enquiries, where the former regional councillor for sport, Elvira Amata, is under investigation for corruption, in the same enquiry in which the president of the Ars, Gaetano Galvagno, is involved. At the centre of it all were contributions for cultural events to foundations and organisations, in exchange for appointments and consultancies for the president's staff. Justice will now take its course, in a country where most of the regions are hit by a wave of investigations that touch every political colour, from North to South
