From Mur 50 million to universities with medical courses

50 million are on the way for the management of the open semester of Medicine. The announcement was made by the Minister for Universities on the sidelines of a meeting with the Rectors' Conference. She described it as 'a further concrete sign of attention to students. We are investing significant resources,' added Anna Maria Bernini, 'to accompany the reform of Medicine and to support universities that are expanding their educational offerings and improving spaces and services'.

The funding involves 44 state universities and is divided into three components: a standard share of 11 million euros, distributed equally (25,000 euros for each university); a variable share of 30 million euros, allocated on the basis of the number of students enrolled in the open semester; a share of 9 million euros based on the increase in the number of places available in the Italian-language Medicine and Surgery course in the 2025/2026 academic year compared to the previous one. The largest slice of resources will go to Roma Sapienza with 3.98 million euros, ahead of the Naples Federico II-Bologna tandem, which will have 2.85 and 2.39 million respectively. Then Milan Statale (2.29 million), Padua (2.25) and so on.

For the current academic year, there are 24,026 slots available to aspiring white coats, which is 3,002 more than in 2024/2025. The Mur's 50 million arrives less than ten days before the first national roll-call on the three compulsory subjects for access to the second semester (Chemistry and biochemistry propaedeutics, Physics and Biology), which will be held throughout Italy on 20 November at 11 a.m. To register, students who attended the first semester have until 15 November. While the second call is scheduled for 10 December (with the possibility of registering by 6 of the same month). Ahead of that date also comes a clarification on absences: the attendance obligation is fulfilled with participation in 51% of the training activities. If a higher threshold is envisaged by the individual university, it will still be possible to sit the exam as long as remedial courses have been arranged.
