Dreame Technology enters the automotive market. The Chinese consumer electronics company, best known for its sophisticated floor-cleaning robots, has announced the creation of an automotive team with the goal of creating 'the world's fastest electric car'. In an internal memo, the new team introduces itself to Dreame's employees with a speech full of determination and repeatedly emphasising the importance of the breakthrough and the intention not to take the automotive market, defined as 'the crown of industry, the ultimate arena of technology, but also an extreme challenge where everything is at stake', lightly.
The path is reminiscent of that of Xiaomi, the Chinese technology giant - which was also one of Dreame's main investors - which stunned the entire market with its first two car models, Xiaomi SU7 and YU7, which sold like hot cakes on the domestic market.
It is too early to say whether Xiaomi's is a repeatable model. Dreame reveals that the will to design and produce cars has existed since the company's incubation and that 12 years later the time has come to realise that dream, but not on a whim: 'this is not a gamble, but a test of strength. We have overcome countless difficulties: technology, organisation, global management... We don't want to waste a penny on the wrong path'.
Unlike Xiaomi, according to the text of the internal memo, Dreame would like to look to the global market immediately so that 'consumers around the world recognise that a Chinese product can not only be excellent, but also become a symbol of trust and quality'.
According to reports in the local press, Dreame's aim is to distinguish itself from Xiaomi by focusing at least initially on the high-end segment, or rather the very high-end: in 2027, Dreame would like to launch a luxury electric supercar inspired by none other than the Bugatti Veyron. The traditional luxury car brands are still innovating too little and too slowly, according to Dreame, leaving a space in which they can insert themselves and try to make a name for themselves.
