Sts offers technologies to reduce noise in data centres

The turning point came ten years ago, when Sts Isolamenti – a Turin-based company founded in 1978 and specialising in noise control solutions – filed its first patent and accelerated its transformation, with an ever-increasing focus on research and development, under the leadership of Giorgio Cellerino, the founder’s son, who has been at the helm of the family business since 2012.

Today, this small Piedmont-based company (with a turnover of around 2.5 million euros in 2025 and 20 employees) already holds four patents and has been recognised as an innovative SME – one of the few in its sector in Italia. “Over the past few years, we have developed expertise primarily in the so-called HVAC sector – that is, ventilation, air-conditioning and heating systems – which remain our core business,” explains Cellerino. “But over the last two years, we have developed some highly innovative products, thanks to a crowdfunding campaign involving as many as 60 investors, who have also opened the doors for us to a rapidly growing market: that of data centres.”

Few people realise, in fact, that among the environmental issues associated with these enormous servers – which are essential for supporting the roll-out of Artificial Intelligence, 5G and Edge Computing – are not only the high levels of energy and water consumption required to operate and cool them, but also the constant noise they produce. So much so that in some US states, including New York and Virginia, there have been numerous protests against their construction, and many projects have been halted or delayed for this reason.

Well, Sts is able to provide solutions to this problem, thanks to a patented technology that makes it particularly competitive in a sector where the systems currently in use are still rather outdated and not entirely suited to the new reality. ‘We supply soundproof enclosures which, when fitted to the outside of these machines, allow them to operate as before, whilst reducing noise and, at the same time, protecting them from the elements and thus ensuring a longer service life,’ explains the entrepreneur.

In 2025 alone, the company recorded a tenfold increase in demand for soundproofing solutions for data centres compared with previous years, and the growth prospects are very encouraging: “Last year we achieved a turnover of 2.5 million euros; this year we had already reached that figure by July, and we expect to increase our revenue sixfold by 2027.” Sts has in fact recently completed a contract for a data centre in Lazio and is finalising a project in Frankfurt: “But we have many projects underway, with open tenders that, together, are worth around 60 million euros,” concludes Cellerino.
