Summer is not an easy time for the film box office, but it is also a time when extraordinary exploits have occurred: think of the so-called 'Barbie' of two years ago, a real box office phenomenon whose name is due to the simultaneous release in the United States of Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' and Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', two films at odds in terms of theme and overall performance, which, however, probably took advantage of the joint release at the end of July.
Which title wants to make the summer box office its own? Let's start with blockbusters, of course, as at the beginning of July it will be the turn of 'Jurassic World - The Rebirth', the seventh feature film in the franchise started by Steven Spielberg in 1993. Directing this new instalment is Gareth Edwards (director of 2014's 'Godzilla' and 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story') and at the screenplay is David Koepp, the man who had penned the scripts for the first two titles in the saga.
"Superman"
.Equally eagerly awaited is 'Superman', to be released on 9 July, to be directed by James Gunn, author for Marvel of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy and since November 2022 the creative director of DC Studios. For his company, this film is a milestone in understanding what the future of the company and perhaps of all comic-movies will be in the coming years.
The "rivals" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are instead focusing on "The Fantastic Four - The Beginnings", due out on 23 July and a new reboot starring the characters created from the pen of Stan Lee. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby will be cast as Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, respectively.
The following week, however, comedy fans are in for more than a laugh with the new 'A Blunt Bullet', the fourth film in the franchise that began in 1988 starring Leslie Nielsen. Now, twenty-one years after the third chapter, the new protagonist will be Liam Neeson.
