FS: Frecciarossa test runs get underway in Germany and Austria
Flights to Munich are scheduled for summer 2027
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The project for Frecciarossa services between Italia, Germany and Austria – which Trenitalia (FS Group) will implement in collaboration with the German railway operator Deutsche Bahn and the Austrian railway operator ÖBB – has taken a further step forward. Test runs of Trenitalia’s trains – specially configured and fitted with the necessary equipment – have now begun in Germany and Austria as part of the international type-approval process. The launch of services between Milan and Munich and between Rome and Munich is scheduled for summer 2027, following the successful completion of the type-approval process for the new trains. The test runs are taking place on the German railway network between Berlin, Munich and Kufstein. In Austria, the Frecciarossa is undergoing test runs between Kufstein and the Brenner Pass, and between Salzburg and Vienna. Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the FS Group, stated: “The start of test runs in Germany and Austria marks a step towards the realisation of a project that confirms our ambition to make the train the preferred mode of transport for European mobility. Thanks to our collaboration with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, we are moving towards the creation of the high-speed ‘Metro of Europe’, providing passengers with a service capable of bringing regions, people and economies closer together”.
