Fuel prices are rising again: petrol is 5.5 cents more expensive than a month ago

Fuel prices are rising again. According to data from the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, as recorded by the Fuel Price Observatory, today, Saturday 5 September 2026, the average ‘self-service’ mode across the national road network is 2.052 euros per litre for petrol (2.046 euros yesterday) and 2.164 euros per litre for diesel (2.157 euros yesterday). On the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is 2.138 euros for petrol and 2.237 euros for diesel. Exactly one month ago, on 5 August, prices on the national road network stood at 1.997 euros per litre for petrol and 2.097 euros per litre for diesel. The increase was therefore 5.5 cents per litre for petrol and 6.7 cents per litre for diesel.
“According to the latest figures from the Mimit Fuel Price Observatory, as of today – Saturday 5 September 2026 – the average price of self-service fuel across the national road network stands at 2.052 euros per litre for petrol and 2.164 euros per litre for diesel”. This was announced by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, which added that on the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is 2.138 euros per litre for petrol and 2.237 euros per litre for diesel. Yesterday, the average price of self-service fuel on the national road network was 2.046 euros per litre for petrol and 2.157 euros per litre for diesel.
“From 1 September to today, in just four days, a 50-litre tank of diesel on the motorway now costs 1.65 euros more, and a 50-litre tank of petrol 1.70 euros more. On the road network, the increase is 1.70 for diesel and 1.50 for petrol,” reports Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers’ Union, commenting on the Mimit averages. “The Government continues to extend an excise duty discount on diesel that is only half of what is needed, whilst it has done nothing about petrol for two months, since 4 July, effectively washing its hands of the matter. Even worse is the fact that, in 1,414 days, it has never implemented any measures to curb speculation. The structural measures the Government is now talking about are just a ploy to allocate less money, reducing excise duties – not for everyone, but only for a few categories of Italians – perhaps passing the cost on to businesses, as with the commuter bonuses, but they do not prevent oil companies from making millions in windfall profits,” continues Dona. “For years we have been calling for serious action, with every annual competition law, but politicians are doing nothing,” concludes Dona.
