Fuel tourists, Slovakia wants to raise prices for foreigners
This was stated by the Prime Minister, Robert Fico, as part of the measures taken by the government to counter fuel tourism
A price increase only for foreigners. That is what Slovakia is considering on the cost of diesel at the pump, which could rise only for foreign motorists.
The increase in purchases at the Polish border
This was stated by the Prime Minister, Robert Fico, as part of the measures taken by the government to counter fuel tourism. Fico explained that representatives of the Slovnaft refinery, part of the Hungarian oil and gas group Mol, had informed the government that in some northern districts bordering Poland, lower diesel prices on the Slovak side of the border had led to an increase in purchases.
The government's measures
Governments around the world fear a fuel price hike triggered by the war with Iran. Hungary has imposed a cap on fuel prices, while Poland's largest refinery, Orlen, has reduced its margins to contain the impact on consumers. Slovakia has so far avoided any measures, relying on sellers' self-regulation, which can also limit volumes. Fico said that the government wanted prices comparable to those in most neighbouring countries such as Poland and lower than in Austria.
