Fuels, here are the prices at the pump. Without excise discount, petrol at 2 euro per litre and diesel at 2.12
The renewal of the fuel excise cut is not a foregone conclusion and will depend on the price lists at petrol stations on the key days, i.e. those close to the expiry of the current discount
A question of prices. The renewal of the cut in excise duties on fuels is not so obvious and will depend on the price lists at distributors in the key days, i.e. those close to 6 June with the expiry of the current discount (-6.1 cents per litre for petrol and -12.2 cents for diesel). This was said, days later, by Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, who also hypothesised new targeted interventions, for example (again) for hauliers.
The calendar
Setting dates at this point is crucial. Because the next Council of Ministers is scheduled for Thursday 4 June, two days before the excise cut deadline. A decree-law could arrive on that occasion.
On the other hand, the discourse for a possible ministerial decree is different. That is, the one that could activate the 'mobile excise' mechanism using the extra VAT revenue. That figure, which in April was worth 191.2 million, it is not a foregone conclusion that it will still be used to finance the fuel tax cut, as Pichetto Fratin said a few days ago.
Prices falling
Also because prices, although higher than pre-war months, are not record-breaking. The average price of petrol is around EUR 1.940 per litre, i.e. 2.5 cents less than on 22 May (the day the last extension was made).
As far as diesel is concerned, the matter is a bit more complex. Because compared to 22 May, the price increased by 3 cents per litre. Yet this is less than expected, because on that day the discount was reduced by 12.2 cents per litre. In short, net of the government intervention, the price fell by 9.2 cents (12.2 - 3).
