Full moon brings luck to McLaren in Bahrain: Piastri's fourth win

A year ago the sovereign fund got McLaren out of trouble: then the two current drivers finished sixth and eighth. Today the young Piastri ended a perfect weekend, pole position and victory. Second under the chequered flag was Russell, awaiting possible penalties (perhaps he was being clever by activating the Drs even outside the 'second gap' stipulated by the regulations), then Norris and Leclerc. In the end not too bad for Ferrari, who also saw Hamilton get voted 'driver of the day' by the public.
In this night race, the first and only one under a beautiful full moon, the influence on the 'speedmark', the McLaren logo that may be a swirl but also looks to some like a slightly stretched quarter moon, is evident. There was performance, there was luck, even if they didn't need it. The car remains superior, the rivals are not even up to their own standards compared to a week ago.
The only ones making slight progress are perhaps the Ferraris, with Leclerc fourth and Hamilton fifth while Russell is sub judice: on the other hand the disappointment was huge and this week it was imperative to finish with dignity. After the Sprint win for Hamilton and the harsh disqualification in China, with only a decent fourth and sixth in Japan, they had to react and aim higher before the rivals took too much of a lead in the world championship. They really tried: Charles fought tooth and nail for a long time, Hamilton was less noticeable but was able to climb back up to his team-mate without making mistakes, despite a car that was still not too congenial to him.
However, it was not easy. The start for both Ferraris was bad. Indeed, Leclerc's was immediately overtaken by Russell and shortly afterwards also by Norris, who gained three positions from a modest sixth place. Leclerc thus fell behind two colleagues, but with the choice of medium tyres it was a risk that was almost a certainty. In fact, Ferrari opted to differentiate the strategies between the two drivers, given the unexceptional qualifying of both. Kudos to Bearman, who starts last and manages to finish 15th. Hamilton remains stable, unable to overtake Verstappen. Antonelli also did badly, losing two positions and even being overtaken by Sainz, who had qualified surprisingly eighth yesterday.
In the first stint, Piastri runs very fast and gains ground on his rivals. Shortly afterwards, towards the end of the first ten laps, Hamilton began his advance, overtaking Sainz and pulling Tsunoda back.
