G7: Leaders say, ‘We support the US-Iran agreement and reaffirm the right of transit through the Strait of Hormuz’
A France-UK-led mission could help traffic get back on track
"We recognise the turning point and the opportunity currently presenting themselves in the Middle East." This is stated by the G7 Heads of State and Government and their partners in their declaration on geopolitical issues. “We welcome the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran, reached under the strong leadership of President Trump, with the support of the mediating countries, which offers a historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to address the threats posed by its regional and ballistic activities. We support and stand ready to contribute to its implementation,” the G7 states in the declaration. “We reaffirm that the right of unrestricted and toll-free transit is the foundation of international trade. We agree that the multinational, independent and defensive initiative led by France and the United Kingdom can play an important role in facilitating the resumption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, protecting merchant ships, reassuring commercial shipping operators and supporting the verification of the removal of all mines.”
