Avoid the possibility that Iran could become a nuclear power, thus posing a threat not only to Israel but to the entire West. No to the idea - launched by Donald Trump - of entrusting Vladimir Putin with the role of mediator in the crisis between Israel and Iran. Cautious optimism on tariffs ("a solution will be found"). At the end of the G7 Giorgia Meloni outlined with the press a balance of the G7 on Canadian soil, in the mountains of Alberta.

Meloni: Iran nuclear power threatens all

The PM claimed a strong convergence between the leaders on crucial dossiers, starting with the Iranian issue, the subject of the final joint declaration also signed by US President Trump, despite initial perplexities. Meloni reiterated her firm opposition to the possibility of Tehran acquiring an atomic weapon: 'A nuclear-powered Iran would not only be a threat to Israel, but to all of us'. While recognising Israel's right to defend itself, Meloni insisted on the need for a negotiated solution. And on the words of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to whom Israel 'is doing the dirty work for everyone', the PM invited to read them as an expression of a shared awareness: 'We know there is a threat today, and we must work to defuse it'.

«Putin? A nation at war does not mediate on more war'

As for the Trump-led proposal to entrust Putin with a mediation role in the Israeli-Iranian conflict, which had created turmoil on the eve of the summit, he ruled out any openness on the part of the G7: 'Entrusting a nation at war with the mediation of another war would not seem to me to be the best option.

"US bases in case of conflict? When it happens we will make decisions'

On the possible use of Italian bases by the United States in the event of an armed conflict with Iran, Meloni is cautious: 'It is not a decision that is taken just like that. We will evaluate, if and when it is the case'.

Pressing for Gaza ceasefire

During the summit, the President of the Council promoted an initiative for a ceasefire in Gaza, gaining the consensus of the EU partners: "I believe that this is the right moment to achieve a ceasefire. It is an objective on which I have been working a lot in recent days,' she said, stressing the need to involve the Arab countries, particularly those in the Gulf, more closely in the management of the crisis.

Full support in Kiev

On the war in Ukraine, Meloni renewed her full support for Kiev and President Volodymyr Zelensky, condemning the 'brutal' Russian attacks: 'Every time a step forward is sought, Russia responds by striking civilians'. He added: 'There is a broad readiness on the Ukrainian side for negotiations, but zero on the Russian side'. That is why, she stressed, it is necessary to 'put pressure on Moscow with sanctions' and, at the same time, 'continue to support Ukraine'. The PM then denied rumours that Trump had vetoed a final statement on Ukraine, pointing out that it was not on the agenda.

High optimism on US tariffs

As for the US tariffs on European goods, Meloni was moderately confident: 'There is a negotiation underway, and the fact that there has been talks between Trump and von der Leyen shows a willingness to find solutions'. And she also claimed Italy's role in fostering a constructive climate: 'We are proud of the work done to build a frank but calm confrontation. The goal remains that of finding an agreement by the 9 July deadline, averting the hypothesis of a 'no deal'. Finally, Meloni underlined Italy's role in the management of the migration issue, stating that 'the Italian recipe is also taken as a paradigm by other major nations'. One of the summit's seven declarations is in fact focused on the fight against human traffickers, according to the 'follow the money' principle, based on an Italian proposal.
