G8 Genoa: march in Piazza Alimonda, flowers and two fire extinguishers placed on Giuliani’s plaque
Demonstrators are commemorating the killing of Carlo Giuliani with chants and symbols, retracing the key locations of the 2001 clashes during their march towards Piazza De Ferrari.
In a packed Piazza Alimonda, with flowers laid on the memorial stone bearing the plaque ‘Carlo Giuliani ragazzo’, dedicated to the protester killed during the demonstrations of 20 July 2001, the march marking the 25th anniversary of the G8 summit in Genoa has just arrived. “We are all Carlo Giuliani”, chanted the demonstrators, along with “Our ideas will never die; Carlo is alive and fighting alongside us”, as the march made its way through the square, retracing all the symbolic sites of the clashes and violence of 2001. A group of young people unfurled a banner on the steps of the church: “20/7 red flags in the wind. They kill one comrade, 100 more are born”. The group laid flowers and two fire extinguishers beside the plaque in memory of Giuliani.
Banner protesting against Trump and Vannacci
Following the stop in Piazza Alimonda and the tribute to Carlo Giuliani, the protest march organised to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa has set off again. The banner leading the march has changed; at the front is a black banner reading ‘Trump, Vannacci, suck it’. The march is heading towards the city centre before proceeding to Piazza De Ferrari.
