Garmin has announced the acquisition of MyLaps, a Dutch company with over 40 years of experience in developing sports timing technology. This is a highly strategic move that has direct relevance in motorsport, where precision, telemetry and real-time connectivity are crucial for teams and organisers.
Founded in 1982, MyLaps is a pioneer in automatic timekeeping systems, notably through solutions based on active transponders, induction loops installed on the track and software for event management and performance analysis. Its systems, with an accuracy of up to 0.001 seconds, are used in FIA, FIM and international karting competitions.
Key technologies include the X2 System, a complete professional motorsport timing solution that combines transponders, decoders and servers for real-time data transmission. The Live Timing App platform allows spectators, teams and drivers to follow the races remotely with automatic updates on lap times, positions and gaps. Speedhive is the dedicated cloud interface for results management and detailed session analysis. MyLaps also offers race control tools, including systems for safety car tracking, penalty and incident management, with the possibility of integration with TV and broadcasting systems.
Garmin, for its part, is already well positioned in motorsport with multi-sport GPS devices, wearables for drivers and advanced telemetry solutions. One example is the Garmin Catalyst, which is used to optimise driving performance by combining GPS data, accelerometers and video analysis. By integrating MyLaps technologies, Garmin intends to offer a unique platform that combines real-time data collection and visualisation, high-precision timing, video analysis with overlays of speed, trajectories and braking, as well as cloud and mobile tools for comprehensive event and performance management.
"We are excited to bring MyLaps and its reliable timing technology into the Garmin family and believe this combination will transform the racing experience for our passionate customers. Together, we look forward to setting a new standard for performance-focused training and race day technology." Said Brad Trenkle, Co-Chief Operating Officer of GarminIn.
