The Russian army is suffering record losses in Ukraine as its advance on the ground slows
The Russian army suffered record losses in Ukraine last month, whilst at the same time ceding part of the territory to the forces in Kyiv, according to data from Western intelligence and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
More than 54,000 Russian soldiers were killed or seriously wounded in October, the highest figure since the start of the full-scale invasion almost five years ago, the Ukrainian leader said on Sunday. Ukraine is using drone footage to document the number of casualties, which now exceeds Russia’s monthly recruitment rate.
Assessments by European governments shared with Bloomberg show similar figures, with the proportion of soldiers killed also at record levels.
Furthermore, for the second month running, Kyiv’s forces have managed to recapture more territory than Russia has been able to occupy, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Moscow’s troops are even losing ground in the crucial eastern region of the Donbas, which Vladimir Putin aims to control entirely.

Russia: worrying signs that attacks on Iran are being planned
“The signs pointing to plans for new military action against the Islamic Republic are extremely alarming,” said the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
Russia supports the efforts of the mediators and is assisting the negotiation process; it is also ready to contribute to the search for solutions regarding Iran, according to the statement: “The tragic events of recent months have convinced us that military adventures, which sow death and destruction in Iran, are incapable of breaking the Iranian people’s resolve to defend their country’s sovereignty and independence. Those who are now threatening further attacks would do well to reflect on this,” Zakharova continued.
Russia hopes that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will return to normal, taking into account the legitimate interests of all parties involved, the spokeswoman concluded, stressing that Moscow welcomes a high-level meeting between Iran and the participants in the Mecca Pact, as dialogue between neighbours is of fundamental importance.

Moscow is set to complete the mega-spy radar in Kaliningrad
Russia is about to complete what experts believe to be a massive radar complex in Kaliningrad, its exclave situated between Poland and Lithuania, capable of monitoring much of Europe and, perhaps, even intercepting satellite communications: the latest warning comes from DW, which cites various sources and other rumours leaked to the press, including the British newspaper The Times. Although Moscow has not confirmed the construction of the facility, security expert Vaidotas Malinionis has stated that the radar will be so large that it will be able to see “beyond the curvature of the Earth”. The retired Lithuanian commander told DW that the network of ‘over-the-horizon’ (OTH) near Gvardeysk will have a surveillance range of around 3,000 kilometres, enabling Russia to scan almost every corner of Europe, as well as the whole of Ukraine.
According to reports, the system would enable Russia to intercept satellite communications and detect the movements of aircraft and ballistic missiles. “The aim and purpose of this radar are long-range target detection and early warning capabilities: we do not yet know whether it is operationally capable of doing so, but it is certainly under construction at the moment,” added Malinionis. In an interview with DW, the Latvian analyst Evija Djatkovica went on to warn that the resurgence of this old Soviet technology poses a significant disadvantage for NATO, particularly in light of the growing use of new technologies in modern warfare. “The new radar signals an intensification of the rivalry between Russia and NATO for military supremacy and control of the Kaliningrad region,” she emphasised. “This is a potentially dangerous situation, as one might expect further militarisation on both sides and, at some point, a pre-emptive strike could become an option to prevent the other side from gaining an unacceptable advantage over the region”, she warned.

Shoigu (Russia): ‘The closer we get to the end of the military operation, the more aggressive the West becomes’
Western aggression is on the rise as Russia nears the conclusion of its special military operation, said the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. “The objectives of these actions are clear: to contain Russia and install whatever political regime is put in place. The closer we get to victory and the successful completion of the special military operation, the more aggressive and perverse these attempts become,” said Shoigu, as quoted by Interfax. “Today, against the backdrop of a tense international situation, the leaders of many European countries have chosen the path of military escalation, cynically ignoring the numerous demands of their own citizens, who have been forced to take to the streets en masse to protest against the government’s thoroughly partisan policies,” the Secretary of the Russian Security Council added.

Russia bans the export of petrochemical products
Russia has introduced a temporary ban on the export of certain petrochemical products, with the aim of “ensuring a stable supply of raw materials to Russian industrial firms”: this is according to the independent Russian website Astra, which cites the Russian government’s official website.
The ban applies to the export of “benzene of coal and petroleum origin, toluene, ortho-xylene, para-xylene and phenol”, Astra explains; these products are used “in the manufacture of paints and enamels for the automotive, aeronautical, shipbuilding and railway sectors”, as well as “in the production of food packaging, floor coverings, cable insulation materials and in the medical industry”.
The measure has been introduced for a period of three months, and the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) – namely Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan – are excluded from the measure.

The end of Novaya Gazeta: how silence is falling over independent journalism in Russia

Moscow, August 2022. A woman who looks rather lost enters the Novaya Gazeta offices. She almost seems to be pleading as she asks to see the editor, Dmitry Muratov. I try to work out why she’s here and what she wants. ‘I’m not sure, I think it’s something personal,’ they reply. ‘In Russia, even the editor of a newspaper is often seen as an authority figure who can do something to help you.’

Kiev: an oil facility in the Russian region of Samara has been hit
Ukrainian drones struck an oil facility in the Samara region, in the town of Prosvet, some 835 kilometres north-east of the border, in an attack that took place last night. This has been reported by the Ukrainian monitoring channels Supernova+ and Exilenova+. Footage taken by local eyewitnesses shows smoke rising above the town at first light. The Kyiv Independent is unable to independently verify the targets or the extent of the damage caused by the attacks. The Prosvet facility, a crucial hub in the Russian oil pipeline network, comprises pumping stations, storage depots and blending plants. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the facility blends oil from Western Siberia and other oil-producing regions of Russia to produce fuel for export to the Russian armed forces.

We have disabled push notifications and temporarily suspended the app – as stated in the message also published on Telegram – The app does not store personal data, so there is no risk to users. We urge you not to click, under any circumstances, on links contained in suspicious notifications. US pushes for the resumption of Russian gas sales to the EU via Ukraine
The United States is calling for a rapid resumption of Russian natural gas sales to Europe via pipelines crossing Ukraine as part of negotiations to secure an energy truce for the winter. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources who claim that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushenr raised the idea during their trip to Russia and Ukraine in September. The sale of natural gas would be carried out through an American intermediary to circumvent sanctions.
US negotiators believe that Russia’s return to the European natural gas market would offer President Vladimir Putin an incentive to accept a deal, reports the Wall Street Journal. The use of Soviet-era gas pipelines would also allow Kyiv to generate new revenue. The proceeds from Russia’s sales would be channelled into an escrow account in a third jurisdiction to prevent the Kremlin from using the funds to finance the war. The idea was presented to European leaders as a solution to reduce prices and was reportedly received with a cool response. The proposal marks a change of course for the Trump administration, which, during the president’s first term, had harshly criticised the construction of Nord Stream 2, arguing that it would make Germany “a hostage to Russia”.
