The Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip condemned the Israeli airstrike against the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City in recent hours, saying that "fighter jets targeted the hospital, bombarding it with numerous missiles", according to Anadolu reports. The Gaza press office called the action 'another horrific crime', pointing out that the hospital, the only one left operating at full capacity in Gaza, housed hundreds of patients, wounded and medical staff. The Gaza government, which is headed by Hamas, said in a statement picked up by Anadolu, that it held 'Israel and the US, as well as countries such as the UK, Germany and France, responsible for the attack'. The statement goes on to urge the international community, UN bodies, and humanitarian organisations to denounce the attack and take immediate action 'to end the violence and protect medical facilities'.
Subsequently, the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry condemned the attack and called on international institutions to protect the health sector in the Strip. "The Ministry of Health condemns the attack by the occupation on the Gaza Baptist Hospital in the early dawn hours of today, shelling a building inside the hospital and completely destroying it, which led to the forced evacuation of patients and staff who were inside the hospital," reads a statement posted on Telegram.
"We call on international institutions and stakeholders to protect the health sector in Gaza in accordance with international and humanitarian laws and agreements, and to take immediate measures to end the ongoing violations against the Gaza Strip, particularly against patients and the health sector," the note concludes.
The army: it was used by Hamas to attack
.The IDF and Shin Bet announce that they attacked a Hamas command centre inside the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza overnight. "The compound was used by terrorists to plan and execute attacks against the army and citizens of Israel," a note states, adding that prior to the raid they issued evacuation warnings in the area and used precision weapons and aerial surveillance. "The terrorist organisation Hamas systematically violates international law by brutally exploiting civilian buildings and the civilian population as human shields for terrorist operations," the army states, calling on Hamas to stop using medical facilities as cover.
The management of the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City reported that the shelling 'resulted in the destruction of the surgical building', Channel 12 reports. 'We no longer have a safe place to stay,' some Gaza Strip residents said after the evacuation of the hospital. According to the Gaza Civil Emergency Service, no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the IDF announced that the hospital could come under further attack.
