On the night of Sunday 4 to Monday 5 May the Israeli government approved the announced major offensive in Gaza against Hamas.

Then, in the evening of today, 5 May, at close quartersthe Israeli fighters responded to the missile launched the day before by the Houthi that pierced the defence systems, hitting Tel Aviv airport: 50 bombs destroyed the port of Hodeida, in Yemen, the seaport where the weapons sent from Iran were arriving. With a warning: 'Massive raid, it will not be the last. The games are over,' threatened an Israeli security source, confirming that also the US took part in the operation. And it would be at least two dead and 42 wounded the latest toll of the Israeli attack launched today on the Ajal factory in the province of Hodeida, Yemen. This was reported by the Houthi-affiliated al Masirah channel, quoted by Ynet and the Russian Tass agency.

The day had opened with a statement by an official who remained anonymous, but 'very close to the executive in Jerusalem', which threw the families of the hostages into a panic: the plan for Gaza drawn up by the IDF generals envisages the 'conquest of the Strip' and the retention of the captured territory. This phrase bounced into the headlines of Israel's main (anti-Netanyahu and anti-government) media.

Israele, l'opposizione contraria al piano di "conquista" di Gaza

Tension, already high in the country, has skyrocketed. Families reached the Knesset to protest and ask the reservists to refuse to fight. At noon, the army brass felt it necessary to provide the public with clarification on the contents of the plan by speaking to Yedioth ahronoth, the most widely read newspaper in the country.

"The programme for expanding the operation in Gaza is broad but still limited:it explicitly excludes areas where it is believed there may be hostages. We have no plans to enter those areas," the officials explained. "The new phase will mainly include a shift from raids to a takeover of portions of territory (but not the entire Strip), clearance of tunnels, only a quarter of which have been neutralised so far," they said.

However, the offensive will not begin immediately: the army will wait until the end of US President Donald Trump's trip to the Gulf countries, from 13 to 16 May.

A time window for Israel's ultimatum to Hamas: an agreement on a truce and the release of the hostages in the next ten days, otherwise Operation 'Chariots of Gideon' (a biblical figure known for having led a small Israeli army against a numerically superior enemy and succeeded in defeating it) will be unleashed.

But first of all, the operation entails that the entire population of northern Gaza and the centre will be evacuated en masse to the south, between the Morag corridor and Philadelphia where facilities will be built to accommodate them. Subsequently Israel will introduce humanitarian aid into the Strip, a humanitarian plan will be implemented that will clearly distinguish between Hamas and civilians, distribution will be through private companies, probably American. "We will help them get food. They are hungry," Trump confirmed, pointing a finger at Hamas, which "treats them very badly. It makes things impossible because it takes everything that comes in.

Israele, Netanyahu: "Pronti per un'invasione massiccia di Gaza"

The Israeli government previously announced its plan to distribute humanitarian aid to Gaza in army-controlled centres.

Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir clarified that there will be no return to previous levels of approximately 650 trucks per day, but only essential goods will be supplied under strict control. And he reiterated that the IDF will not take part in the distribution, as already agreed with Netanyahu. The prime minister intervened only in the afternoon, with a short video: "We will launch a massive operation in Gaza. To defeat Hamas and free the hostages. There will be a displacement of the population to protect it. This time the army will not enter and leave Gaza as in the past, reserve forces will be mobilised to remain in the occupied territory".

In recent days, and close to the cabinet meeting, Zamir warned the premier and ministers of the risks: 'Israel could lose hostages if it launches a large-scale operation in the Strip'. A danger, this, that does not seem to worry the ultra-right minister Bezalel Smotrich, who during the heated late-night discussions of the political cabinet, and the clash with the head of the IDF, argued thatthe war should be exploited to re-establish the Israeli settlements in the Strip, dismantled in 2005 by a unilateral decision by the then premier Ariel Sharon. A position that is not new but which today has further exasperated tempers.

Family members of the kidnapped and dozens of protesters blocked the roads leading to the government offices in Jerusalem, with clashes between the demonstrators and security. Demonstrating the increasingly heavy climate the country is experiencing.
