On the night of Sunday 4 to Monday 5 May the Israeli government approved the announced major offensive in Gaza against Hamas.
Then, in the evening of today, 5 May, at close quartersthe Israeli fighters responded to the missile launched the day before by the Houthi that pierced the defence systems, hitting Tel Aviv airport: 50 bombs destroyed the port of Hodeida, in Yemen, the seaport where the weapons sent from Iran were arriving. With a warning: 'Massive raid, it will not be the last. The games are over,' threatened an Israeli security source, confirming that also the US took part in the operation. And it would be at least two dead and 42 wounded the latest toll of the Israeli attack launched today on the Ajal factory in the province of Hodeida, Yemen. This was reported by the Houthi-affiliated al Masirah channel, quoted by Ynet and the Russian Tass agency.
The day had opened with a statement by an official who remained anonymous, but 'very close to the executive in Jerusalem', which threw the families of the hostages into a panic: the plan for Gaza drawn up by the IDF generals envisages the 'conquest of the Strip' and the retention of the captured territory. This phrase bounced into the headlines of Israel's main (anti-Netanyahu and anti-government) media.
Tension, already high in the country, has skyrocketed. Families reached the Knesset to protest and ask the reservists to refuse to fight. At noon, the army brass felt it necessary to provide the public with clarification on the contents of the plan by speaking to Yedioth ahronoth, the most widely read newspaper in the country.
"The programme for expanding the operation in Gaza is broad but still limited:it explicitly excludes areas where it is believed there may be hostages. We have no plans to enter those areas," the officials explained. "The new phase will mainly include a shift from raids to a takeover of portions of territory (but not the entire Strip), clearance of tunnels, only a quarter of which have been neutralised so far," they said.
