Il Likud ha deciso di rimuovere dalla commissione Affari Esteri e Difesa della Knesset Yuli Eldestein, il deputato che ha ’disobbedito’ alle direttive di Benjamin Netanyahu votando a favore della proposta di legge, sostenuta dai partiti dell’estrema destra, per l’annessione degli insediamenti israeliani in Cisgiordania. Lo ha fatto sapere l’ufficio del primo ministro israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu al Times of Israel, smentendo la notizia di un disaccordo con l’Egitto sulla questione di cui aveva riferito Sky News Arabia. In the legal opinion calling on Israel to allow Unrwa to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, the International Criminal Court says the Israeli government has not provided evidence to support allegations of terrorism made against employees of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. "The court finds that Israel has not provided evidence to support its allegations that a significant proportion of Unrwa employees would be 'members of Hamas or other terrorist factions", said ICC President Yuji Iwasawa. Israel banned Unrwa after accusing some of its members of taking part in the 7 October Hamas attacks.

An independent enquiry led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, had in April 2024 determined that although there were 'problems with the neutrality' of the agency, that Israel had not yet provided evidence to support the allegations of terrorism. Last year, the UN General Assembly had then requested a legal opinion from the ICC, which now states that Israel 'has an obligation to accept and facilitate the aid programmes of the United Nations and its entities, including Urnwa'.

The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, called the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice 'shameful', stating that theUN institutions that, according to the Court, Israel must support with humanitarian aid are a 'breeding ground for terrorists' (see news 16:15).

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will arrive in Israel tomorrow, an Israeli government spokeswoman announced, heralding the third visit by a senior Washington official this week. The Knesset, Israel's parliament, has approved in a preliminary vote a bill to extend Israeli sovereignty to the West Bank. The measure, tabled by MP Avi Maoz of the far-right Noam party, received 25 votes in favour and 24 against. This is the preliminary stage before the three votes needed to become law.

The Israeli parliament also approved a second proposal, made by MP Avigdor Lieberman of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, to apply Israeli sovereignty to the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, near Jerusalem. The text was approved with 32 votes in favour and 9 against.

The Gaza Strip is experiencing a health 'catastrophe' that will last for 'generations to come', according to World Health Organisation (WHO) Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who emphasised the urgency of increasing humanitarian aid in an interview with the BBC. Although Israel has allowed more medical supplies and other aid in since the ceasefire with Hamas took effect on 10 October, Tedros said that the amount is still insufficient to rebuild the health system.

Asked about the situation on the ground, the WHO director explained that the inhabitants of Gaza have experienced famine, a collapsing health system and outbreaks of disease fuelled by the destruction of water and sanitation infrastructure: 'In addition, there is limited access to humanitarian aid. This is a truly fatal combination, which makes the situation catastrophic and indescribable'.

Luke David Irving, head of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in the occupied Palestinian territory, says the population of Gaza faces an 'incredibly high' threat from the explosive devices scattered in the enclave. Reported by Al Jazeera, Irving noted that last week five Palestinian children were injured by these weapons, buried in the rubble of Israeli shelling. And this, he added, is just one of hundreds of reports.

"To date, 328 casualties of explosive devices, including injuries and deaths, have been reported to Unmas since October 2023," Irving told reporters during a briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. "We expect this figure to be significantly underestimated. Unfortunately, we can estimate that many more people have been injured or killed by the devices disseminated in Gaza over the past two years." Unmas has been able to identify at least 560 explosive devices in Gaza, in areas the agency has been able to access. "However, we will not know the exact extent of contamination in Gaza until a full investigation is conducted," Irving concluded.
