Media: 'US plan for Gaza divided into two zones'
According to the Guardian, the US is planning a long-term division of Gaza into a 'green zone' under Israeli and international military control and where reconstruction would begin, and a 'red zone' to be left in ruins
The US is planning a long-term division of Gaza into a 'green zone' under Israeli and international military control and where reconstruction would begin, and a 'red zone' to be left in ruins. The Guardian reports this, citing some documents it has seen and several sources.
In addition, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly planning a meeting with Hamas chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. The New York Times reveals this, citing informed sources. The initiative would signal the Trump administration's desire to maintain a direct channel of communication with the Palestinian movement, despite the fact that Hamas is classified by the US as an international terrorist organisation. A meeting between the two would also signal Witkoff's lack of concern over criticism, both in Israel and the US itself, that dialogue with Hamas would risk legitimising the group. The date of the possible talks is not yet defined and, according to sources, the plans could be subject to change.
Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers will discuss a proposal next week for the EU to take the lead in training 3,000 Palestinian police officers with the aim of later deploying them in Gaza, reads a document seen by Reuters on Friday,
Russia submitted its own draft resolution on the Gaza crisis to the UN Security Council today, setting itself in opposition to the text promoted by the United States which aims to get the green light for President Donald Trump's administration's peace plan for Gaza. This was reported by the Reuters news agency, which viewed both drafts.
Washington had released its draft last week, claiming to have gathered regional support for a resolution that would authorise a two-year mandate for a transitional governance body and an international stabilisation force in the Strip.
