The Israeli military escalation in the Gaza Strip has prompted several Italian trade unions to call for mobilisations in solidarity with the Palestinian population. The days affected by the strikes are at the moment 19 September (CGIL) and 22 September (grassroots unions). Here are the sectors at risk.
Strike 19 September, essential public services not affected
The general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, who will participate in the procession marching in Catania on the 19th, explained that since 'times are very tight', the strike on Friday 19 September will not affect essential public services regulated by law 146 (such as transport, school and health for which the abstention must be proclaimed further in advance). The private sector categories will instead decide on the package of strike hours. The initiatives will be at the territorial level, including assemblies, garrisons and demonstrations. "The four-hour strike at the end of the shift or within the work performance," explains the Federation of Transport (Filt) of the CGIL, "will affect heavy vehicle drivers, drivers and employees of the freight transport and logistics, workers in the road sector of ANAS, regional companies and motorways, and employees of Rent a Car, rental without drivers, parking management. In ports, male and female workers may strike for up to a maximum of 24 hours, with the exclusion of those working for companies whose activities may in some way affect constitutionally protected personal rights.
General strike on 22 September (grassroots unions)
Instead, the Cub, Adl and Sgb grassroots unions have announced a national general strike of all public and private sectors for the entire day of Monday 22 September 'to express unconditional support for the humanitarian mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla and demand the protection of the volunteers engaged in bringing aid to the Palestinian people'.
